Fortin Cali Mod Marshall VS Splawn Quick Rod

I owned both at the same time. Cali is more compressed. Quickrod more open. They feel totally different. I owned the 50watt Cali and thought it was too tight for my style.

The QR makes a good doorstop.... :D

Why?

QR's are fine amps, they just have a particular sound that some love and some don't. A QR with a great player will sound better than a CCV with a not so great player.

I understand that, just wanted to see if he had anything to back up that trash talking. :)

More importantly who is a nicer guy,Mike or Scott?

I like both guys if you are referring to the builders. I will tell you that hands down Mike Fortin goes so far above as far as customer service personally that Mike gets the nod. Not just to Scott but to ANY OTHER BUILDER I have dealt with.
I can remember talking to Mike on the phone on a Sunday.
A friggin Sunday about amps, etc....
Jerry from FJA is another guy that goes way above the call of duty. By way of personal one to one customer relations these two guys are tough to beat. Brian from BFG mods should get a mention in here also. He is a good guy to talk with about amps and more. ;)
All of these guys with my experience try sincerely to tailor their efforts to each individual customer without compromising their work's integrity. And that is important. Very important.
I have had ups and downs with a few builders.
How the relationship recovers or does not recover after those downs tells me about that builder as a person. After this if he falls short, then I buy his work No more......
I don't care what it sounds like.
To many builders out here to give money to anybody that can't act right.

:D that was rude, wasn't it?

they are totally different amps. nothing about a QR is voiced like a Cali. you will get more traditional Marshall tone across all 3 settings of the QR. the Cali is bigger, beefier, fills a room better, more saturated and won't fall apart, more quiet than the QR.

it all comes down to what you are looking for in an amp.

who's nicer, mike or scott?      scott will leave you a psalm in the chassis. mike will send BBQ ribs.

I thought it was about a Cali not a CCV. It can also make a crap player sound good. It's popular that way.....

I prefer my amps Jesus free. :dunno: I have had some of Mike's ribs and they are damn good.

Had a weird dealing with Scott a looooong time ago, when he was doing mods only. Turned me off to not be interested in his stuff anymore and I sold both modded Marshalls that he did for me.

If you are going to see if Mike can build one, he can pretty much dial in what you want, even the 2nd channel. with the 2 gains and clipping options and other Cali tricks, it is a box full of tone, from mild to wild.

at best, your QR is going to be replicating a Plexi, JCM and a Hot-Rodded JCM. The Cali will bury it.

Has SteveK even owned a QR amongst the hundreds of other amps he 's owned

Tubescreamer?

Yeah, definately not an amp to hide mistakes with gobs of compression and distortion. Turns most people off ;)

Best doorstop I ever bought :D
