Mike was kind enough to send me his Modded Arsholl 50 watt small box for me to check out (love the Arsholl logo :hys: )
This is the same amp that Dave Z. used for the clips and All I can say is that I want one....and I want one now. IT fucking RIPS!!!
If this wasn't a test amp that Mike freeqently Mods I would have already asked him if I could buy it lol :D needless to say, Im sending him one of my 100 watters for him to Mod to this spec ;)

The amp is layed out like a Normal Marshall -> presense, bass,Middle and Treble but it has the addition of a Master Volume and 2 gain controls. Directly underneath the Master is a Loudness 1 toggle switch and underneath the Gain 2 there is a loudness 2 togle switch and directly underneath the gain one there is another toggle. Each one of these toggle switches has 3 positions.

On the back of the amp there is a feel Knob. This allows you to set the feel of the amp to either tight or Spongy! Im not sure if this is a stock option though lol! I think Mike put that on for me being that I like both the tight and spongy feel when it comes to amps  *(Mike Rules!:) )

Here what each toggle does:
The toggle Switch underneath the master volume controls the amount of compression or should I say saturation. Switching it all the way to the left gives you the most Saturation and it also cuts the volume down...VERY COOL(my Fave...go figure lol)!! The volume cut is great for guys like me who live in a condo..You get this saturated ballsy sustaining sound at TV volumes but the cool thing is that you can get the volume back by turning it up! When you turn the amps master up in this mode it gets insane sounding... Don't get me wrong, the amp sounds great low and you'd be happy with it but as soon as you give the amp some gas ....HOLY SHIT!!
Switching the Toggle in the middle gives you your stock sound but will some more balls (way better then stock IMHO) and the volume comes up to normal leves!! There is a very cool VH vibe here when you crank the amp and switch the bright cap off(more about the broght switches later on!)
Swicthing the toggle to the far right gives you a less saturated sound then having it all the way left and its less compressed. To me this is a happy medium to all of them and having these options should satisy EVERONE IMHO. If you are a gain freak like me and you like compression then the far left toggle would be for you. if you dig more of the stock marshall vibe but with a kick in the ass... The middle toggle is for you. If you are a gain freak like me and want less compression.. The far right it for you ;) Not a bad sound in this thing and the bases are covered IMHO.
Keep in mind that even on the most extreme setting that even though I say compressed...Its not Overly compressed.. I don't want to give the worng impression here!!

Bright switches:
The Toggle Underneath Gain 2 and undeneath Gain one are Bright Switches that allow you to select 3 types of sounds!. The higher the gain settings the less effect the bright switches have. The addition of this is amazing since it can drastically alter your tone. This is not a one trick pony amp. Working both gain post in different position with all the combinations of the bright switch positions gives you a plethora of options to tailor your tone.
WAY COOL AGAIN! Setting the bright switch to the far left give you one sound, I belive the middle is off and to the right kicks in a different value.

Well that's pretty much what it does..... How it sound is another thing. Dave Z. Was able to show you two different distinct sounds and Im getting tons more by playing around with it.
I love this sucker and Im sending Mike an amp within a few days!! Who needs to pay credit debt lol :hys:

All the best!!

Ralph

Great review!
you need to write the owners manual. now THAT I could understand! :)

So two questions,

1. Can the production Fortin amps get this without having to find a donor amp to get these mods done?

2. How much can you clean the amp up with the guitar volume if you are running the toggles for heavy saturation? I am figuring that it could be footswitchable but thinking of cost.

Mike has his own thing going on with his production amps. They are special IMHO. The Cali Mod that he does has more of the traditional hot rod thing going on whereas his own amps, although hotrodded to the balls, have there own thing going on!. With that said, Im pretty sure that Mike could voice his production amps to sound like whatever you wanted them to but I'm not sure if it would be worth while for him to do thay but I'll let him chime in!!

The answer is yes, you can clean up the amp by rolling off the guitar volume with this mod even when set to extreme gain. I think it would work better with other setting but you can do it plus there are so many other tones in this thing that its nuts.
Id like to have these features switchable but I agree that the cost and time it would take Mike to do this would be nuts.
The amp I am sending him will be Identicle to this one but I am having him install a line out so that I can slave this bitch :hys:

The thing is that I was pretty much gas free as the only amp I would really want is Danhops's Cameron and know I have no shot at that one plus other reasons but the easy availability of Mike's stuff has opened that fucking pandora's box again

I am not willing to mod the SLP I have as I really dig it as is getting hammered with peddles and the HP but if I find a HW SL all bets would be off

Mikes production amps are totally special, with the ability to run 4 different power tubes you can really change the oevrall feel and tone of the amp, when I heard clips it had 4 el34's when Mike loaned me the amp it had 2 6550's and 2 el34's made the amp respond and sound different. The preamp is so flexable that it's got endless tones in there, The preamp was voiced just right for me, with my gear it nailed killer lead tones and tight rhythm without blinking a fuckin eye!

I personally think everyone should own a Bones, but then again I'm totally sold on what Mike can do, Mike's mods are awesome, and so are his production amps, the Bones is in another league because of the transformers and the fact there is alot mroe Mike can do with it as it's his own design, and has room for upgrades and changes, and a mod is limited to it's donor platform, The transformers in Mikes amps are alot more powerful and just allow for a killer tone altogether!

I can't reccomend a Bones enough, let alone his mods!

either way you can't go wrong!

Peace!

hey Brother!! If you really love the SLP as is, DO NOT mess with it. Mike would tell you the same! With that said, if you ever get your hands on a beater marshall, id send it to him because the Cali mod is right up your alley. I have the privillage of knowing you and the other metal-heads in this area and I would not steer you wrong ;)
I love Mikes work and of course you know how much I love mark Camerons work!! That said, its getting tough to get a Cameron because he is so busy!!!

It is a Marshall smallbox 50 Watter MKII. I think its a re-issue.If you want to see it, . It's the same one that's in the video Dave Z. Posted

Thanks for the comparison and now understand the differences and what options may be available  I will have to get some time with each to make a final choice, I will admit I am firmly in the higher gain marshall camp these days.

I dig the SLP right now so much as it is still pretty new but would not think twice of sending it if I scored another

I have never listened or bought anything that Ralph has used or owned

Cool. I figured it was a more modern model like a 50 watt JCM 800 to get those gain levels you were describing but I guess Mike is adding more than I was thinking he was. But then again I dont mod mps so I dont know what the hell Im talking about. :D

Cool review Ralph. And sounds like it's a cool amp. Voicing switches, compression toggles, and feel knobs all in one amp...certainly seems as if it will cover all the bases.
