found my dream crunch tone in a modeler

Yep, it's true. a modeler into a solid state amp, into passive full range speakers yielded the tone i've been trying to get for years. when i had my dream crunch tone back in the day, i played through a massive rack of doom into two 4x12" cabinets. well, that was 2004. since then i've struggled to get that tone back with minimal gear....close, but not quite there.

tonight I found my dream tone! while cruising through my eleven rack preset collection adjusting the amp out volumes to work with these Alto speakers, i stumbled upon one of my first presets from like 3 years ago. i made the preset when i had plenty of tube gear to compare to. my dream crunch tone is along the lines of many 80's artists with good cd tone like EVH, Lynch, Dimartini, Bettencourt, etc. so it's no surprise that my favorite tone is based upon the JCM800 model. it's so easy to work with that amp...just dime the gain and master output, then roll back your guitar volume control until it's clean...then tweak the tone controls for the best clean sound. from there you have all of the 80's tone you ever wanted. add a tube screamer with low gain, high volume, and tone at about 2.5 and you can push the leads to a smooth creaminess.

if anyone is interested in this preset, let me know and i'll post it....otherwise, i'll keep this baby all to myself. (insert evil laugh here) :rock:

Congrats on finding your tone...i cringe at times on how simple and patently obvious getting my tone was but couldnt accept that it would be this easy.
 
Cool. I love the SLO and plexi models in the pod HD. I set the gain low and hit it with the Tube Driver sim. Sounds awesome! Modelers have come a loooong way!
 
I wouldn't say I found my dream tone in a modeler but I found, probably 10+ tones that I am really happy with compared to 1 or 2 that I was (almost) completely happy with using a real amp. I found using the POD HD with the speaker and mic sims turned off into the return of a small tube amp sounds pretty darn good. The little bit of magic that I'm losing using a modeler for my preamp I feel is made up for ten fold with the flexibility it offers.

here are some details:

based on my quest for the brown sound, so i used some early EVH tricks. i didn't like the plexi as much as the JCM800 for some reason, so it is what it is.

eq before the amp allows me to tweak my pickups and loose the flab and any high fizz, while boosting the mids.

choice of cabinet and mic is early EVH choices also.

for lead, kick in the white boost, which gives you more of what you already have.

i like the delay on for lead, or even when i'm riffing around by myself.

the reverb is rather large...which is my choice for the rockstar home jam.

this is just a basic start for some people, for me it's an end to a long search for a crunch tone that cuts through and cleans up easily. through my Alto passive monitors, this preset is the best thing i've ever done.

as much hype as there was on this latest preset, i was almost scared to release it for fear of it not sounding as good on other people's gear. but i felt like it was a real breakthrough to me anyways, and maybe it would help someone to dial up what they wanted by using this preset as a guide.

i knew i was onto something when i kept thinking about how good my tone sounded all day at work and i couldn't wait to jam.

I plan to try it out - just can't get to the DropBox site from work. It's a "file-sharing" site and is blocked by the Internet Nazi's :lol: :LOL:

the distortion is what i call "clear". in more technical terms it means that the distortion is made up of more mids. more bass sounds mush. more highs would give it a single coil spank. i learned to pre-eq back in 1989 when i got my first Rocktron preamp, which featured an eq before the gain stage.

when i first made the preset, i used the greenbacks...which sounded a little dark, hence the extreme amounts of treble and presence used on the amp model. then i switched to the 20 watters for a goof and found gold.
