I have to say that I learned SO MUCH from Doug Marks and those original Metal Method instructional cassettes. I have no way of knowing or endorsing what his newer stuff is like, but for like 1982-1983 in the suburbs of Chicago with not very many metal guitar teachers around these were a huge learning source for me

I had Lesson 5 which was "Metal Licks" and had over 100 common heavy rock and metal licks on it.

Lesson 6 was "Metal Theory" and presented scales and modes and chords in a way that made sense.

Lesson 7 was all Van Halen licks and Lesson 8 was all Randy Rhoads licks.

This thread is just a big thank you to Doug Marks and his Metal Method that helped me become a much better guitarist than I was before I got the tapes.

I wonder how much money he's made from this stuff?

Oh yeah... and... can I borrow Lesson 5?

    I remember those. A buddy of mine had them, I stole all kinds of licks off those tapes

I have the Speed Kills DVDs. Great stuff, there's a wealth of knowledge on there if
you can keep up with MAB...I can't

those were cool! that pic of Doug was METAL  always wanted to order them, but never got around to it...still have some old "Circus" & "Hit Parader" mags saved that have those ads in them.

that's awesome! I literally taught myself how the modes work using the Randy Rhoads tape #8 in conjunction with a Mel Bay book - those were great times!

Wasnt he waving around a Carvin of some sort?

He was waving around Jackson's when that was the absolute coolest, newest, hippest kind of guitar around. Just seeing those in pictures was enough to inspire me to practice for hours so someday I could have Jackson's too. He switched to Carvin's a few years later.

I had a bunch of those tapes too. Good times. Wish I'd buckled down and learned more from them when i was young and had the time for it though.

Man, I think that I bought those tapes just because of that picture though! Look at that guitar-face he has going!

Exactly. AT THAT TIME, he looked so cool and it was shortly after Rhoads died and he had this exotic, unattainable guitar and this great Rhoads'esque image and I was sold baby! ;)

I hear you. For me understanding theory felt like it was like a lightbulb on a dimmer switch and the more I learned it just slowly got brighter and brighter. Then one day it all clicked and the light went on full blast. Metal Method was a start for me in making it all make sense plus he was focusing on my 2 favorite guitarists at that time.

I bought the new DVD set a couple years ago for my nephew and they are pretty cool, its all the old material just updated, and yes Doug was still playing an all white Carvin

Same here! Really wish I would've focused more with it. I still have them around somewhere... just need to find a damn tape player!

I always wanted those as a kid...I should buy them now....best part of being an adult

I order a few lesson from him and Love them so much that I bought the album of his band called Hawk. That was a huge disappointment because the solos on the album sounded a lot like the lick lessons. :bash:

I need to dig it up for nostalgia reason, but where to find a needle for my turntable.

I learned alot from those tapes too...had the Licks, Theory and the Randy lessons. Still have the Hawk album somewhere. No Vh for me even back then.

I bought the entire package! I learned a ton from those books and tapes.. That pic of him is classic!

Holy blast from the past!! LMAO!! I never got his tapes but I
I had the star lick Tape.... You know The one where they yelled out...LICK NUMBER ONE and then they proceeded to play a lick that you would never use and they wuld play it at warp speed and then they would then say LICK NUMBER ONE>>>SLOW and then they would proceed to play the same lick it maybe 1/10th slower :hys:

What a useless piece of crap it was! Out of 30-40 licks there were maybe two that I liked and they never told you how to use them in a song context :hys:
