FRFR is not for me

I have noticed that the slightly overdriven blues guys like the FRFRs but the higher gain guys tend to not like that setup.

Results from intense polling and following the Zealots from other forums and threads

Thinking back, I preferred the QSC's for rockish tones, but not high gain brootalz

I got to hear the new tube powered FRFR speaker cabs from Atomic yesterday, which were designed for the Axe Fx. I supplied the demo rig for Cliff and Tom for the LA Amp Show, which was the Axe Fx and a VHT power amp and a really good sounding Germino 4x12 with greenbacks. The Atomic cab sounded amazing. I tried QSC, JBLS and Mackies and the Atomic cab just kills them. They have a custom emminence speaker and powered with 6l6 tubes. I think this will be the must have for the Axe Fx, its really that good.

This is pretty big news! If this is indeed the cab that Cliff alluded to several months ago.

Was there a HF driver in the cab? What was the form-factor? 2x12? 1x12? Can you tilt the cab?

I like my QSC setup personally... and I'm far from a blues guy. Different strokes for different folks.

Having said that, It's pretty likely that I'm going to run the axe with a Randall RT 2/50 and a pair of Marshall 4x12s at an outdoor gig on Halloween... just to try somethin' different.

I'm not sure what it is but it may be that I just like the feel and sound of 4 speakers coming at me opposed to 1?

When I tried the GT-8 for modelling I tried the Mackie SRM450 and came to the same conclusion that it was ok at home but sucked in a mix. I then used my Marshall el34 50/50 while better it was still not what I wanted tone wise. Now I use the Gt-8 for effects only and a JVM 410H I'm done tweaking.

Yeah Rich, I was kind of wondering how long the love would last with FRFR speakers. I had tried a pair JBL EON15's once with the Ultra and it was absolutley horrid. That experience kept me away from even trying the QSC's that were being bragged on so heavily a couple months later. I've been weighing all the final verdicts that have been coming about after the initial lust dies away with the QSC's and it's pretty much the same. Like you, people end up migrating over to the poweramp/guitar cab. I've definitely decided I'm never straying from the poweramp/guitar cab setup. It's just too perfect to my ears.

I've had the Carvin TS-100 now for almost a year and it's been a great poweramp. Of course you know your needs better than I but I personally don't have the need for any more wattage. 50 watts per channel in stereo is plenty running behind me either playing outside or inside. Larger indoor/outdoor venues my cab gets mic'd anyway and our sound guy said it still sounds killer. If you do some reading on the TS-100 you'll find out that it is such a neutral and colorless tube amp that many people use it in hi-fi applications. I find it warm. But then again I've never directly compared it to an SS poweramp either. For 550 bucks and change you can't go wrong. Carvin has a pretty liberal return policy so you should at least try it. Through my Marshall 1960a cab or MC 2X12 cab it sounds great. I actually prefer the 2X12.

That was one of the amps I was looking at but I figured I'd go for a cheaper alternative for now (mosvalve) and see how I like that. I may try a SS carvin after that as well beflore I go tube. I just need to find what i like.

I ended up going with a Marshall Valvestate 8008 for size and simplicity... I loaded a 4x12 with WGS Green Berets... When we finally get out to gig, I'm just going to have the patches tweaked with the cab sims I set through my KRKs at home, and set the secondary output before the cab sim into the power amp/cab route. It's made the most sense to me so far... it doesn't throw you off, because you still have a regular guitar cab behind you, but you can send a stereo XLR feed to the house. Then, yeah, your tone-life is in their hands, but it usually is anyway; so, I'm just trying to give them something less to goober up. I've used it just stereo into the house and only had a monitor on stage... sounded great in the house and recorded, but just felt naked not having anything really jamming at you.

Good luck man, I hope a pa/cab treats you better... try to even go cheap at first, you might be surprised.

Could be. I'm probably going with a pair of 4x12s as above just because the stage would look friggin' empty with my puny QSC behind me instead of 2 Marshall cabs!

I think That Tom from Atomic amps and Cliff from Fractal are doing amazing things. They've got a lot of killer ideas and products comming our way for sure!

The ATOMIC was killing with the Axe. Sounded and felt fantastic. I liked it better than the VHT setup they had, but I believe the cab sims may have still been on when I was running through the VHT. Tom said 90 days out, or so, and priced between $650 and $700 (at this point).
