How much gain is available on the lead channel? Is it as much as HBE on the BE100? I've been smitten by the Friedman BE100 since I played it last week. Considering selling my Kemper and Legacy 3 to grab a used Smallbox. My impression is that it's lead channel doesn't have the same available gain as HBE mode on the BE100. Can anyone confirm one way or another?

Thanks.
Dave

It doesn't have the gain of the HBE but any OD will easily get you there.

I tried a Smallbox recently and loved it. My favorite Friedman amp. I don't need the fire breathing gain of the BE as my tastes have changed but the SB had more than enough for me. I wouldn't sell my Kemper for it but I would easily buy one for sure. Thinking of selling the Mesa Boogie ElectraDyne and picking up the combo version for my band when I want to use a tube rig.

If u can give it some healthy volume... Mine has a pretty good amount. I have the SAT switch and its always on.

I need just a little bit more for some solos. I have a koko boost which works good and a klon clone which works well if you keep the level down quite a bit. Im still looking for the "one" when it comes to a boost. Honestly the amp is voiced so well that i may just pickup a mk.4.23 pedal.

Best. Amp. Ever.

I've recently started running a boost in front of the plexi channel and it's been sonic bliss. Just a great great amp. I have the combo and swapped the CB H75 out for the CBM65 and couldn't be happier.

this is a smallbox with a sat circuit and toggle modded by Dave, this is a topic that has many valid opinions.I was in the debate and bought a smallbox, loved it.I sold it 2 months later and got the BE100,I ran overdrive s in front of the smallbox, it's super nice. The feel and and depth and gain of the BE100 was not the same as a pedal for me,not even a question.it's actually brilliant marketing because they both do great tones and have seperate features,The BE100 has more gain as is marketed.

Dave states the stock SB has "approx double the gain of a stock JCM800"...and that's about dead right IMO.

My sig track is something I just recorded with the smallbox (entirely). The rhythm is purely the BE channel, the lead is the BE channel with a slight boost from a Timmy pedal. LOVE the amp!

Back to the topic of which has more and not how much everyone loves the smallbox" I still have the OD pedal i was hitting the front of the smallbox with, i have tried it in front of the BE100 Be channel as i did the be channel of the smallbox.Dont use it as, i prefer the feel and grit and gain from the HBE vs a pedal, its all about player preference.I have never understood the debate, hard pressed to even make sense of it.I guess if i were using to record and play back and adjust the amp accordingly maybe i would better understand. For me plug in and what i hear and feel is usually why i am considering buying,The smallbox I liked and as people post many times over,it is a beautiful piece of work. For the money i wish it had worked with the od pedal for me as well, but as your thread asked which has more gain. The BE100, if the smallbox had a fat circuit and a c45 and a sat and a voice switch then maybe so,personally i think these are options that add to the more chewy darker sounding BE100.I am glad i own it.The plexi channel on the Smallbox is definitly something that stands on its own,but that's not about gain, and it is nice!!! Save yourself some time and get the be100 if you want more gain,or if your lucky enough to be able to play both in a good setting, guitar, and verb/delay you can shorten the search.GLWTS

I also love the smallbox as well. Its honestly close to perfection. My opinion is that the be channel has plenty of gain and almost too much bottom end sometimes. I tried some pedals with it and the best combination for me was boosting the plexi channel with an ocd. It sound almost like the be channel but less agressive. The ocd works well with the be channel too but a basic boss sd-1 sounds badass with the be channel gain on 6 or 7. The good thing with boosting the be channel with a pedal is you can fine tune the sound with the tone knob if you want it alittle brighter. If I was gonna get the smallbox modded by Dave i would like to have a built in boost for the be channel and also a toggle switch for two different gain voicings only for the be channel. Something like what mesa does with the vintage/modern switch on the reborn recto.

The Smallbox will need an overdrive pedal to get you into HBE territory, but that combo should be capable of producing all the gain you ever could want or need. I cranked my Smallbox up this weekend and it sounded amazing. I had people coming from down the block to check out the band and it was just me. :D I got some nice compliments and no complaints about the volume. Easily my favorite amp ever.

Yes. Disclaimer that orange Suhr has Aldrich pickups and is tuned half step down. Most aggressive sounding guitar I've ever owned

As far as gain goes, the SB with SAT switch would be plenty for me. What I would only know by playing it myself is, does it have the same feel as HBE on the BE100? Your vid sounds like it does but of course, you can't hear "feel" in a vid. That BE100 was so punchy, tight and chewy.

I can say it doesn't have the same feel,or I say I didn't for me,had a great tone period..be100 as advertised has more gain and more bass, and being 100 watts more headrrom..which equals more modern darker sound..for me more gain as well..I dint have a sat mod on my smallbox so I can't offer any info...the be100 is bigger in size and in sound..the smallbox is a great amp and great choice regardless. designed more in the realm of less modern, watch Dave weiners video.he describes the feel of the smallbox

Sat switch is not standard on the Smallbox, yngzaklynch had his modded by Dave to have one. Unless you already knew?
