Fryette Fat Bottom vs. Friedman or others.

I had one VHT cab long ago....for about 2 days until I returned it to GC. Worst POS cab I've ever heard in my life. Had all these high expectations since I had both a D60 and a D120 in the room.
No punch, no nothing. It had those P50s. It sounded so bad I didn't even bother to try different speakers in it.
Ugh.

I felt the same way. I had both a D cab and tried the FB cab with the p50es and hated them. I ended up swapping them out for v30s and liked those a lot better in those cabs...but ultimately sold both. When they started using Fane's I took a chance on them and ended up loving the cab...now one of my favorites.

That's sort of what im concerned about. I know one of the members here is selling a wizard 412 ksr built loaded with redbacks, would that be more my style? Also im not sure if there's any difference between the KSR built wizard cabs and BAD built cabs.

I doubt it, they are built to Rick's specs regardless. I haven't seen a KSR built cab, but the headshells are identical build wise, though I think BAD does a better job with the tolex.

If you are referring to Justin's cab, I can definitely recommend that as well. My Wizard/Redback cabs are my favorites with the FB a close second. He's not too far a drive from Alabama (Houston). @WizardSouth-JP

Same here: hated the p50es, love the fanes.

All the P50e hate is interesting. I have never tried the real ones, but I really like the York IR pack of them.
They are distinct. Not for everyone, but worthy of respect IMO . Steve Fryette collaborated with Eminence in designing them specifically for the cab and likely his amps as well.

At one point I had the Fatbottom w/Fanes, Friedman w/V30-G25's and the Uberkab all next to each other. I still own the FB. They're all good cabs but for my style, the FB won out.

For what it's worth my P50E's had WELL over 10 years worth of break in/use on them

I still have my VHT FB 2x12 loaded with them to this day; still don't really like them

They are decent enough in the room but very bad under a mic in my experience

The "hollow" comments are spot-on; it's like there's a weird void somewhere in the frequency range when you mic them. Almost like a comb-filtered sound

FB cab is good, I wasn't blown away with it next to my EVH to keep it. Sold it after a year or so. Friedman cab will have a more vintage vibe. DIdn't like that cab and sold it quick, again next to the EVH and an Uberkab.

I also have a D412 with those P50es. Honestly haven't played that cab more than a handful of times in the 3 years I've had it. I don't think its horrible with the P50es but mine was played and gigged for many years so maybe there's something to the break-in period or maybe I'm just not as hate on them as others. They aren't my favorite by any stretch, but not absolutely horrible...definitely a hollowish midrange, weird and hard to describe. Keep wanting to try different speakers in the D412 but too lazy.
If I was shopping for a new 4x12 the first two choices would be a Bogner Uber or the EVH. Both fantastic.
