Thoughts on these? I had a very early UL - no eq - and sold it and have been on an amp quest since. Bought a Sig: X again and while its a great amp, didn't have that fullness. Had a Dual Rec Rev G, Rivera Knucklehead Tre and currently have a Mesa Mark V. Still feeling it out as to whether it's what I want.

The newer UL with EQ is the Fryette I haven't owned. I also owned a Deliverance 120.

Great amp, played one years ago, they had KT88's i believe.
If I can describe its sound, it would be tight, clear and articulate. The word "dry" gets thrown around when describing the tone, and while it does have a dry tone, that's part of the reason why the UL sounds so good.

A good example of what it sounds like.

I personally don't feel the Mesa Mark V touches the UL w/Eq. It is one of the best amps ever made in my opinion. I regret selling mine. I called Fryette to order two of them and was told no. He said they are/were in the process of updating the amp when this Covid bullshit hit and are not doing anymore until the new version is ready. I was saddened at that and at the same time excited for the new version. Now that the Ultra Lead Synergy Module is completed I am hoping they get back on this project sooner rather than later. I am really enjoying the updated Deliverance 120.

Did they give any idea as to what changes are being made to the UL?

Apples and oranges, tone wise. Both are yummy, but everyone will have a preference.

I have never bonded with a Mesa mark amp like a lot of people do. I hear some great tones from members here, most of which have a vast amount of information on how to get the best tone from those amps.

A best bro who is good with Mesa tone advised me for years that I would love the pittbull ultralead over everything else. He obviously knew my style fit that amp as he was spot on. It has been my main go-to amp for at least 10 years now. I have had several Marks and a modded recto since, but they were not as enjoyable as my ultralead with the eq.

That same guy is now playing a VHT Deliverance with the Mesa eq pedal in the loop. He is crazy in love with that rig. I'll see if I can get him to chime in here.

I had an UL w/ GEQ and it was killer but didn't fit the typical "dry" "unsaturated" descriptions that seem so popular. Not sure if it was due to the year (can't remember but might have been 2007), but it was the most heavily saturated gain structure of the 30+ amps I've owned. Also was fairly compressed.

The only analogy I can think of is when you eat something so sweet it makes you sick, the UL I had was like that in the sense it was so saturated and thick/syrupy it was almost too much. I wish I held on to it longer because it was unique, but I gravitate more towards open/crunchy gain structure and that amp was a 180 departure from that.

I had the cl which had plenty of gain on 3oclock was similar to a 6505+ at noon. It had a ton of bass if you boosted the bass slider.

I think the mark 3s sound the most similar but not as tight. The Laney ironhearts also have a similar gain structure.

I tried getting that info out of him and he wasn't talking. He just said if you like the old amp you will love the new one and that it will be worth the wait. Had the covid thing not hit it would be out already and they are excited to get it out. I asked for a ballpark date and was shot down again. Too many variables to give a specific date at this time but ASAP is our goal.

I hope it is soon :)

This would be me.... and yes I've had a TON of gear over the years, and this rig is pretty much perfect for me, as far as the amps in questions, I would also say apples and oranges as well, completely different tones. The UL is aggressive as hell, tight as a gnats ass, and unforgiving as fuck, if your playing isn't on point it'll let you and everyone else know, incredible amps, tone for days.... The Mesa, well you have this one, so you know it...

Really depends on your style and what you prefer tone-wise, if you can play them side by side would really decide for ya, I can't really decide between the two, both are amazing amps, but really different.

My rig is kind of the best of both worlds, Deliverance 120 with the Mesa EQ pedal in the loop, also running a boost in front, gives me alot of tonal options out of a single channel amp. still tight as hell, not UL tight but tighter than alot, the EQ thickens things up quite nicely, and the boost just turns it into a fire breather....

I’ve owned Mark Vs at the same time as my UL but more recently owned a JP2C, so that’s fresher in my mind. It’s a cool amp, but I sold it because, in comparison to my UL and CLX it had a compression in the tone I couldn’t dial out. It also seemed to be more buzzy sounding.

Given their track record of releasing new products, I’d be surprised if a UL mk II hits the market within the next 5 years. I’ll happily buy one when it does though.
