Yeah I agree with @Kelly

He used a million and a half guitars/pickups

This is a rabbit hole looking for a rabbit. And I've been guilty of being that rabbit. I like the custom pickup Gaustad had Greg at Jalen build (Jalen Fair Warning) even with a 500k pot. I have it in two Strats.

I bought a partscaster with a Pariah Destruction pickup that is their Super Distortion inspired pickup and I swapped the ceramic for an A5. I stacked tape on one side to get the spacing. It sounds really good. Still lots of bite and output.

I agree that Ed probably wasn't getting into the minutia of things, he probably was slapping pickups in and out finding what he liked in 78 but Seymour was winding/rewinding pickups in 79 and onwards for him so who knows what was built for him. It's cool that Jim Gaustad still resides in the EVH rabbit hole and briefs us on his latest findings........I do find them interesting.:2thumbsup:

I am more than happy with my 78 model and Duncan WLH myself but the video was interesting nonetheless. The Kramer builder Paul Unkert even says they were PAF's in the 5150 guitars for 1984 and later. At this point a ton of pickups do great job, just pick what you like and wail away IMHO, jacob Deraps does............................

$800 for a set of covered humbuckers? No thanks.
I'll try replacing the ceramic magnet in a Super Distortion myself.
Anyone got a good source for short A5 magnets?
I know Jalen has them, maybe he will sell you one.

Secret to ed toan is cigarettes, Heineken & Coke.

Hello all: I noticed this thread, and thought it best that I make a few clarifications.

I'm the Paul McKeever in the video. I have no connection whatsoever with Rewind Electric. I don't know if chumbucket's comment about "$800 for a set of covered humbuckers" is a reference to a Rewind Electric set, but it's certainly not what I am charging for GFW-80s when I make them available.

The only connection to Rewind Electric is this: the magnet you see in the video - the one I removed from Jim Gaustad's Super Distortion pickup - was a Rewind Electric magnet ( though I don't think it was asymmetrically magnetized when Jim bought it...that surely happened later, and unintentionally ).

Cheers,

Paul

I agree with Dan who agrees with Kelly… even Ed didn’t know for sure… you’re gonna have some hazy recollections after sniffing Columbia and drinking Russia dry!!!

His son, Wolfe is probably laughing his ass off at how stupid this whole thing is.

This stuff is interesting. I will say so many factors are involved in pickups that your head will spin.

Regarding PAF clones, I have some 20 year old Peter Florance Voodoo 59's and they are great. I also have some XO4 pickups from the UK. They are like $330 vs the $800+ of ThroBak and other snake oil sellers.

I saw a video of EVH playing one of his parts guitars with what looked like a Dimarzio X2N in it. Still sounded exactly like Eddie
