Careful Jordan you're pissing in a marshall lovers watering hole

In all seriousness though the dual reverbs aren't bad. I have not played an SLX but i have played a JCM900 DR. Very tight amp - a bear to wrestle it seemed. Not quite enough sustain to use for solo's but it did take an SD-1 as a boost just fine to help on that front.

Ha! Hey, you gotta stir it up sometimes, right? Getting boring around here.

I found Rig-Talk's ticklesh spot with the DSL topic

The main issue with 900s is you need volume. Lots of folks get them and play low, and they suck. Get the power section cooking and they're much better. The SLX is better, but still needs to run loud.

Sounds decent to me. A lot better than many of the guitar tones I hear coming off the stage when the local Top 40 bands are doing their thing.....

This is slightly off track.....but had a Modded SLX that freaking SLAYED!
Played it at gig levels and man it reminded me of "Ride the Lightning" tone for sure.
Had a bunch of other modded Marshalls....Camerons...Friedmans.....Lee Jackson...Egnater....FJA...
and that modded SLX was right at the top of the list for sure.
The video to me sounded pretty generic though. Decent....but nothing mind blowing.

The SLX is the better model in the JCM900 line.

Played a MKIII 900 that sounded pretty good.
I'd like to grab a SLX one day, but whenever I see 900's for sale they are always Dual Reverbs/4100's.

I really liked the 2500 MK III I played. Sounds very 800-ish. Not buzzy. Never played an SLX. The MKIII is better than the 4100 though.

The SL-X is the only 900 that I thought sounded good...the others were way too harsh and fizzy sounding...no tube warmth whatsoever in my experience.

Diode clipping in front no thanks. If I wanted that I would throw a stomp box in front of my 800. Oh yeah I do and it's a Mosferatu and smokes the sound of that 900. I offed mine quicker than I ever flipped anything. Not the Marshall tone I know and love. Just saying.

The SLX is ok but total mush on the low strings. Always wondered if it could be modded to keep it tight on the lows as it's basic tone is not bad at all.

I used to gig a SLX years ago. Mine wasn't mushy on the low end. If anything it was a little stiff and lacked lows. My axe had EMG's at the time, so that probably helped. Plus, that was the only SLX I played, so maybe it was an oddity. They certainly didn't have the gain they claimed, though. I used to boost mine with a Metal Zone. Funny thing is my cab at the time was one of the compact 4x12's they made for the Valvestate 8100 and I used to get compliments on tone all the time  .

Hmm...that's not my experience with this amp. I've played several and never noticed mushy lows, although they all lacked any type of deep low end (a Marshall trait, no?) overall. I have only ever played the 6L6 version though...I can't speak to the EL34 version.

You can't get a tight down picking sound with those amps on the low E string. It just fuzzes out. An 800 with a pedal would destroy it for palm mutes. It sounds pretty good though for rock playing on the higher strings but I hated it for palm muting of any kind. I've played several that all were this way.

For less than 1k Mike Holmgren here gets the modded greasy aquanet tone. Sounds like he's using delay and a boost, but who cares.

Der Marshall yot say em neun hundert!

it just sounds ace when he says it :D

Never heard a Duece or any Stiletto sound that good IRL, that guy's clips of it are the best I've heard from that series. I'm sure the boost helped alot though for that nice edge to the tone.
