G&L MFD Z-Coil Pickups... why?

Been looking at G&L guitars for my regular guitar pron viewing and was perusing through the prototype page when i saw the ASAT Z-3 with these pickups. So what's the point of these. To perhaps give a different tonal character to the lower strings? As in, the lower strings have a more bridge/middle feel or middle/neck tonal character? Or just for funsies.

unique look definitely, but how would they hum cancel as they are still single coils... i think?

besides the weird pickups that i don't understand, G&L guitars are 10/10 in my book and would give my left nut for two of em. or half a nut for one. any takers?
