I have a quad of G12H30 55Hz Heritage greenbacks, and I'm wondering how 2 x greens would sound when mixed with 2 x Vintage 30's? If they work well together, should I put the V30's on the top or the bottom?

try it...I would put them in an X pattern for a 4X12

I've never understood the X pattern configuration. Thinking about it logically, wouldn't you get one tone standing directly in front of the cabinet, another when standing to the left, then another when standing to the right? :student:

I think the X pattern diffuses the sound better when standing in front of the cab...if ya put 2 on the bottom or top you would get more of the top just by the nature of the beast by standing in front of the cab...unless you lay down when you play :)

I sold my buddy two of my Heritage 55s to pair with his V30s in an X pattern in a Savage cab. I played it through my old Savage 120, which he has and my KK++!!! What a great sound!!

when you mix speakers you get an odd image infront of the cabinet and end up having to stand in certain spots to get "that tone" that you like.. keep that in mind

Personally I never liked combining different guitar speakers in the same cab.

I disagree unless you are miking them. I have Celestion G12H Heritage 55hz's on the bottom and G12H Heritage 75hz'z on the top of my Marshall BHW and they sound great no matter where you stand.

Depends on the cab you put them in I think. For what it's worth, the best my Mesa 4x12 ever sounded was with a mix of greenbacks and V30s. In fact, to date that's the best sounding 4x12 cabinet I've ever heard. I'm sad I had to sell it.

Question: Does anyone else hear a grainy, somewhat harsh sounding top-end when playing through Vintage 30 speakers?

No, they're broken-in. Maybe they need to break-in more? I love the top-end for playing leads... Chording is where it's noticeable.

Yeah they are like that when not broken in, but there will always be that grainy upper mids. It is just not as noticeable (still there) when they are broken in.

Yes. This is why they're one of my least favorite speakers. The harsh, V30 honk. Ugh.

I actually like the V30s when they are broken in. No harshness heard from my older UK versions in a Cameron 4X12.

You know, I take it back. I have heard V30s in a bogner cab that sounded positively incredible. I'm not sure what's so different about those cabs that make them sound so good in there. They sound like shit in every Mesa and Marshall cab I've ever heard them in. Now I'm really curious what greenbacks would sound like in a bogner cab....

Not bad I guess!

Yyes, they sound very good in Bogner cabs or equivilant. My Cameron 4X12 is similar to the Bogner 4X12. I have also owned a Bogner 4X12 and currently own a Bogner OS 2X12.
