I have tried it years back after seeing a video recommending it. It's not exactly a single coil sound but it definitely weakens the ouput of the pickup considerably. I found it closer to a humbucker in parallel than a single coil or split coil. Its useful in a pinch. I also took a humbucker apart, removed the slugs and put in plastic rods the same size. Same effect and a little warmer as the screws are closer to the neck than the slugs.

Well now dat vidya gots me thinkin. Wat if yeh pull dem screws otta der an drop sum steel framin nails in der and seal it all up with hot wax? Improvised guitar pickups.
