Not much to say after that. The guy was badass to the core and has always been one of my all time favorite players and inspirations ever since I started down this trip. I cant imagine any Rock/Hard Rock player/listener that could possibly have something negative to say about him.

When he changed things up and went blues , I was disappointed for a hot minute but I love his approach to the blues just as much as his rock offerings

For the past 2 years, Ive barely played ( or listened to for that matter) and I made it a point to change that about a month ago. Instead of the usual noodling, I decided to force myself to start learning tunes and the first 3 that I worked on were Shapes Of Things, Out In The Fields and Empty Rooms. Learning those tunes and getting them down cold has rekindled the enthusiasm and passion to not only play but to get better and its a really awesome feeling. In addition, learning Gary's tunes raises the love and respect level notches above.. Man, I miss that guy...

Hey Kage how you doin' bro?

Yeah you're so right! I remember (only vaguely but still do remember!) when he switched to blues and being a teen at the time I just kinda dissed him for several years altogether.

Only lately in the last six or seven years have I come to realize again what a great great player he IS, the tone the approach the fire the whole deal! For example the live at Montreux was on public tv a couple of times over here just after his untimely passing and I gotta say I loved every minute of it as well!

To my ashamement (is that a word?!) I have to confess I've yet to learn many tunes from him, the only ones I've gotten around to learn are the obvious ones, Over the Hills and Far Away and Out in the Fields (man that run at the end of the solo is an awesome workout for me!!! and I don't mind telling I'll be using it in some form or other on our own songs in the future ;)).

His lead tone has been one of my references all through the years and still is when we are recording with SoulHealer.

Gary Moore is definitely one of my biggest influences. Just so much passion in his playing.

Hey Sammi!! Gary was so gutsy and so full of attitude, piss and vinegar that anything he played kicked ass. Its every bit as evident in his blues playing as it was in his Rock stuff..

Do yourself a favor and learn Shapes of Things, Thats a bit of workout as well, especially to nail it.. And for the record, I have ripped off Gary blind and I am not ashamed to admit it..

Gary is one of the all-time greats, one of my biggest influences and he is one of those guys who will never ever be forgotten. I miss the guy like crazy.. He was the king of melodic playing IMO. He had the ability to go from beautiful melodic phrasing, to all out aggression like he was tearing the guitar to pieces... A quality that i have seen in very few other players.

Gary was just awesome at whatever he did. His blues phase was my least favorite. I prefer his Lizzy and 80s metal phase. And I dug his pop/jazzy phases as well. In fact, I listen to "Dark Days in Paradise" a LOT in the car. Was listening to "Business as Usual" the other day and the kids were asking about it. Told them about the rough life that many Irish experienced and how it shaped them.

It's funny, because my main influences in the 80s were Yngwie and Lifeson. But I always dug Gary (wore-out his "Corridors of Power" cassette all through the 80s). And if I were to describe my rock style now by mentioning one player's name... it would be Gary's. At least that's the way I hear myself when I'm playing similar styles. And my playing style these days is more like him (the force of brute power... over finesse ala Paul Gilbert).

Anyways... always love me a Gary Moore appreciation thread and it always makes me sad to think of great players like this passing before their time. Same goes for Phil Lynott every time I hear a Lizzy song. :aww:

Funny you've been on this kick Kage. I've been listening to a lot of GM lately too.
Started with Corridors of Power into Victims of the Future, then Blues For Greenie, Blues Alive and just popped the Montreaux concert into the DVD player last night. Dead heat as my all time fave with Michael Schenker. Tone, phrasing and passion!
Just incredible straight up meat and potatoes players.
Thanks for posting!

But this is the interwebz. For every true guitar great there's a thousand assholes online with something bad to say. But I don't think Gary Moore was pretty enough for Aquanet. :D

LOL, I think you know where Im coming from Willy!!!

I was late to the party with Gary's music and playing. I just started listening to him over the past couple of years and he is an amazing player. Too bad I wasted so many years not paying attention to him. I had a friend introduce me to him back around 1989 and I blew it off.

I love Gary Moore. My favorites CD's are "Corridors", "Victims", "Run for Cover" and "We Want Moore"

Better Late than never Bro. It sucks that hes gone but he definitely left a large body of music that I will certainly enjoy until the end of my days. Ive grown to love both his Rock and blues playing equally; Its all dependent on my mood.

The cool thing about Gary is that blues seems to get overlooked by alot of rock/hard rock players and Gary attacked alot his blues tunes with that same ferocity that he brought to his rock tunes and helps turn more rock players on to bluesy playing which is essential IMHO. The really cool thing is that Gary had all of the taste, feel and dynamics to pull of the old school stuff with conviction. I just happen to love his spin with the gain and his signature aggressive style that he adds to it..

If I get a Fiesta Red Strat, will it help me approach his awesomeness?

Oh man, If it was only that easy...

I am just finishing listening to "Bad For You Baby" and it has really become apparent just how big of an influence he was on Joe Bonamassa.

These were his comments on Joe.

"I think everyone's latched onto him a bit too much and I think they've put a lot of pressure on him. You can't be a blues legend at that age for a start, and I think the lad's getting a bit overblown. I've spoken to him about it and told him off for playing too many styles. You know, if you want to be a blues artist, be a blues artist, stop playing Yes songs and Indian songs and doing a bit of Derek Trucks and bit of me. He has a lot of influences but I think he's still got to find his own voice really. I think he has to focus on one thing, but I don't want to be derogatory(!). He's a really great guy and he's going to be really, really good."

I'll always love Gary. And I will always dig him more than Joe. But Gary telling Joe to "FOCUS" is pretty hilarious. Part of the reason that I liked GM so much is that he was quite capable of doing well at many styles. So is Joe. I dig that because I like most everything and play most everything. Though I don't think Joe is as special as Gary... Joe's doing just fine. I think that more than a few times over the years Gary was jealous of these "upstart kids" getting more attention/recognition/money than he was. I don't blame him. The music biz is CRAP and true scumbags make major decisions that affect who the fickle public will get a chance to latch on to. But it is what it is. I wonder what Gary would think of Joe playing with his old partner Glenn Hughes and doing the Black Country Communion thing. Probably depend on his mood that day.

I'm with you there on the his blues stuff. Although he was great in doing is not my thing. Garys' best stuff is Corridors of Power and Victims of the Future...also cool was Spectrum stuff.

Funny, only two GM I covers I do are Shapes of Things as well as a instrumental version of Empty Rooms where I play the vocal melody on guitar.

One of my biggest influences, the guy never put less than everything he had into the moment no matter what style he was playing
He is sorely missed
