I miss old Marshalls that sounded GOOD; they make re-issues, but I've never cared much for them. I guess I miss all of the old, discontinued parts that went into making vintage Marshalls sound the way they did. Hunts/Erie, Daly, RS, murata, and Lemco Dogbone caps, ISKRA and Piher resistors, transformers that don't suck, good sounding 12ax7s like Mullards and Amperex, among others and a host of other things I can't think of off the top of my head. There are some good modern equivalents like Sozo's, F&T and Rifa caps, Merren Audio transformers and the tube choices are slowly getting better, but Play a 1959 Marshall SLP reissue next to a real Plexi, or even a good metal panel, and the difference is huge. It makes the reissues sound harsh, thin, brittle and sterile. I don't think it would be possible with what is currently available to re-create the amps of old, but you would think for just a couple of bucks more per amp, they could at least do their legacy justice.
