Glubb's 1976 essay, "Fate of Empires" is a short, easy interesting read, around 90 pages, and presents an interesting comparison of several empires/civilizations from their rise to fall, and some of the common behaviors and activities during each phase. Free pdf versions and audio books on YT are available. Worth a look.

I haven't done any running in about six months but I'm pretty sure I can still beat Milley in a marine corps three mile run right now. I do need to get back on my game though.

Glubb's essay, "Fate of Empires", covers the inevitable common symptoms during his phases of an empire/civilzation rise to fall; one of which is a reactionary effort attempting to go back to former times and greatness; some succeed temporarily, but all eventually fail to stop the decline.

He uses several examples to distill the patterns and phases, which I think are very accurate.

edit: well, as far as gloating, I find the decline entertaining to watch from afar as it plays out in most major blue demoncrat totalitarian dystopian metropolitan cesspools. Are you not entertained?

If you're born in the USA, Canada, AUS, NZ, etc., chances are your own ancestors left their home country for a better life. Nothing wrong with doing the same, beanboy. I'm not leaving until you totalitarians get full control, working on second citizenship now as part of my early retirement. When the ship starts to sink, enjoy going down with it.

I only did 3 years in the military but became aware of most military ranks, except generals…was never in their presence.
Captain is the highest rank that still marches with their troops, Major and above spend most of their days on desk duty and less time “in the field” and as rank increases, physical activity gets more minimal, even to the point of giving up exercising or workouts to their work of problem solving. Very few physically fit high ranking officers.
