hey guys,

grew up on slayer, sepultura, pantera, megadeath and the like. i love the "killswitch" and current death metal sounds like "lamb of god" and "death machine."

i've currently got a VHT-2092 hooked to a Rocktron Prophesy ll. The cab is a JCM-800 marshall with original speakers.
have a couple axes. Jackson Pro Dinky with EMG's, Ibanez S20EX with dimebucker in bridge. Gibson SG split coil.

still feel i can't get that sound i've been after. maybe i should have gotten a JCM-800 amp ?

any suggestions would be great.

Well Slayer uses JCM800s, Megadeth used a lot of stuff but currently the JVM. Killswitch used a 5150 I think. etc, all this points to you liking the Marshall tone. I would go for an 800 with a boost pedal or maybe a JVM depending on how much flexibility you need. Hell even a 5150 would probably make you happy.

The cab is ok, but for best results, combine those GT75s with some V30s, so I suggest getting another cab or some v30s in an X pattern.

No one I know uses that dimebucker pickup. Dimebag himself used a Bill and Becky 500XL or something close to that, not the redone whatever dimebucker. Still, that pickup is probably only good with a handful of amps, of course Dime used Randalls.

A stock 800 is going to need major volume to get the karrang you hear on recordings.

what's the 5150 your talking about ?? i used to have a 50/50 mesa power amp, but your probably not referring to something like that correct ?

back then we had to take the word of the music store guy, but now we have forums ;) just want to get led into the right direction for a new head or speakers for the cab.

are you suggesting those V30's for bass vs hi frequencies ?

thanks again for your input.

Uh! Peavey 5150 amplifier!

I suggest the v30s because they have a fuller kind of sound (more mids) and mixed with the speakers in your cab they sound freaking great.

Any suggestion for a preamp that achieves better metal sounds than a rocktron prophesy ll

Axe-Fx?

MP-1?

Engl e570?

I had a prophesy. too soft. too plastic and digital sounding. I couldn't be bothered with the dialing in of it, but it was a fun toy for a couple weeks.

that's such a great power amp, it seems logical to try another preamp.

i've only had a Mako Mak 4, and it was kindda allright, but didn't have enough lowend for me. so i'll be no help on preamps.

if it was me, i'd look at Engl, or just go with a amp head or rack amp and try and keep the VHT if at all possible for slaving down the road.

maybe a rack Mark III or IV?

mako mak4 preamp into a VHT 2/90/2 would flat out slay for stuff like that

keep the poweramp and cabinet, but out of curiosity what speakers are in it currently? id recommend loading it with mesa V30's. if you want more of a dimebag tone load it with the randall jaguar speakers, or celestion CL-80's

Got a used Line 6 POD. the "Red kidney" style one. Since Guitar Center has a 30 day even on used stuff i thought i'd give it a shot. Kind of surprised me ! Sound pretty sweet and almost what i am after. Can't beat it for $100.

Question regard your suggestion on putting the V30's in combination with the original JCM 800 speakers. Do i have to worry about the ohms since it running at 16ohms with stereo hookup ??

assuming the cabinet is a 16 ohm cabinet, just make sure the speakers you buy are 16 ohm speakers, and wire them the same way the stock ones are wired (in parallel series) and you are good to go.

if you purchase 8 ohm V30's to swap with the 16ohm stock JCM800 speakers you are going to run into problems.
