Gibson Studio is gone but hello Gibson SG!

IIRC, Paul used his favorite real '58 Gibson Les Paul's as the basis for the original '70s PS. They really feel and play close to a Les Paul without the weight.
That is awesome!

SGs can have a midrange bark and bite that a LP just can't quite put out. Kudos on your new addition! A killer SG has yet to make it into my stable but I believe the day will come.

Also, congrats on taking a guitar that wasn't quite hitting the mark and making a change instead of just sitting with it for however long unsatisfied.

I liked my Gibson Studio but did not like the pickups and had to basically send my guitar to Cedar-Sinai hospital and do a triple bypass to change the quick connect pickups, so I decided F that. I needed an SG and missed having one.

As a sidenote, I planned on getting a V or Explorer but did not like the ones I played. They sounded like a kid's toy from China. Did not gel with those at all. So the SG was a great warm blanket so to speak.
Damn that's a sexy one too!!!

I have a Les Paul Standard and a Classic and had the Studio as a backup for gigs. Once i k new i couldn't upgrade the pickup without a significant hassle I started thinking about a change.

I haven't owned an SG for years so nice being in familiar waters again, lol.

I've been wanting to get a SG for a while... I don't know much about them... which one should I be on the lookout for as an introduction to them for 80s hard rock and metal? Unfortunately, there are no shops that carry them around here.

The SG Standard is the one you want and like the title says, is the standard for these models. You have the one like I just got which has the "Batwing" pickguard that covers a lot of the body. Then you have the 61' which had the smaller pickguard. The pickups are different and the one I have is the 490 pickups which do a better job at rock and metal.

It seems the neck shape is different between these two as well.. I was thinking I'd get the smaller neck but if the pickups are that different, I'd better stick with the one with 490 pickups.

I didn't even realize they had different necks. I like the way the 61 looks but the only one I've owned is the regular Standard. I used to gig with one and had an Iommi pickup installed in the bridge.

I have always felt like SGs are just lighter Les Pauls. They are a bit more fragile and are known for neck breaks when people drop them, etc.but I've never had an issue.

Been on the SG train lately too. Just grabbed these two (and the blue one is new new). Both have Wagner Godwoods in them now. I didn’t love the stock pickups in either for my tastes. They hang out with my '94 Standard and my Jaydee Old Boy.

Godwoods are fantastic. Holding onto a pair to slap in something. They started out in an Explorer, made their way thru 2 LPs. Probably end up back in the Explorer. They have the right amount of thickness, output, tightness, cleanup. Cant go wrong with Godwoods.

What kind of tones does a Godwood cover in terms of rock/hard rock, etc?

I have a 2nd Degree Black Belt and would be cool to throw it in there but it is uncovered and would look weird. Plus these sound pretty good.

Looks like I'll need another SG down the road...lol
Yeah, the SG has the quick connects. The '61 is hardwired.

The SG Standard has Quick Connects? I didn't think mine did. I should have checked yesterday. The nut on my input jack was loose and flew off, lol. Was a quick fix and got to learn something new. I'm really loving this SG!

Yep the SG Standards have the PCB and quick connect pickups just like the Studio. But I still don't get why the Studios are $200 cheaper than the SG Standard. I got my Studio used, (basically unplayed) for $1000. But new they're at $1599, where the SG's are at $1799. Of course there's deals out there. I got my Silver Mist SG for $1399 when they were discontinuing the color.

any neck dive or tuning issues with the SGs?
It is really an interesting thing. There is neck dive but the guitar is so light that it is only really there when you don't have your hands on the guitar. I also think that with a good strap, it would probably hold it in place just fine.

That is crazy and I didn't even notice. I really like the 490 pickups. I saw Gibson is finally doing more modern quick connect pickups so not as much of an issue. It does suck though for folks who want a different brand pickup.
