In a week or so I will have NO modded amps..and if my SLO sells I will have 3 amps..totally stock JCM 800 2203(84), stock 2205(87) and next month I will be trading a guitar for a '81 JMP 2203..all stock Marshalls. Just can't get away from my favorite tone! This SLO is amazing and I will miss it...but a stock Marshall and a boost is all I need..

What? No tonemaster or SLO? You're going from a rich cholesterol laden diet to rice cakes? Slow and steady, you need to ween yourself off of that or you're going to have withdrawals and it won't be pretty. ;)

Might as well keep the SLO unless you are needing the money. Just in case you get an itch some day. Otherwise, yeah, a Marshall and a boost is all anyone needs.

You sold the 2203KK ?

I could totally get by with those 3 Marshall's and did a few years back with a similar cadre of amps and some boosts of course.

It's all you need until you get something else.

Then you'll post about the next amp with the same enthusiasm as you did with your SLO.

I'm on the fence right now deciding on selling my Soldano and going back to stock amp with a boost as well.
There is something special about that old school sound that keeps me coming back to it.

The SLO is an amp that I have always wanted to play but have never gotten the chance.

Get a Wizard. I boost mine just a little bit. It's a Marshall killer. Only amp I can say that about and the cleans are great.I have only played an early Plexi once but I have owned 2- PTP Superleads, several JMP's and JCM800's.

i'm headed that way myself. replaced the motherboard in my jcm 2000 dsl 100. it cured the runaway bias. tried playing a couple of gigs with it and liked what is was hearing but couldn't get the masters turned up where i wanted them without making a bunch of people angry.
since i finally got it up and running i didn't want to spend a bunch of time and energy experimenting with it and decided i would look at lower wattage combos instead.
i have a 50 watt laney aor ptl combo with a fane. nice growl and it sounds pretty good. needs a cap job though. i also have a jca 2112 combo with the 12s extension cab. i like the sound.. but wanted more clean headroom.
tried a budda sd 18. great sounding amp.. but a bit too ac 30'ish.
then i tried a dsl 40c. spent a few minutes dialing in tones. found that old school plexi "shimmer" and went "crap. have i missed that". as soon as i found out i could dial in "that" tone i was done. there's just something about the voicing of a marshall that works so well when playing leads.
i've got a gig tomorrow and i'm looking forward to cranking it up and we'll see how it shakes out.. especially pre amp tubes and the speaker. (pun intended)  i'll try a jauernig luxury drive as a boost. it's alot like a fulltone fat boost.. but with a bit of sparkle on the top.

SD-1 is what I have settled on. Can sound a bit harsh or buzzy at lower volumes but if you can get that volume up past 4, that is where it starts. Between 4-7 on the master volume. The SD-1 is my go to and sometimes i'll kick in a bit of a kick from the koko. Forget all those expensive boosts OCD, this or that 300$+ boosts... the SD-1 cuts through when the Marshall can get thick at higher volumes. Keeps it sounding like a Marshall and makes you hear what you heard recorded on all those 80's albums.

I have found i am a Marshall guy as well. Everything i own is in that vein (Randall RM100 with Friedman Brahma, Judge , my own module) then an 82 combo and a handwired PTP 800 i did from an old AOR head I had. Probably didn't need to change it much but i did for fun thinking i would do all these crazy things to the circuit when i ended up with a stock 2204 + 2-3 part changes to loosen it up a tad and give it a hair more gain. I love the sound of less gain on chords when recording. Just cuts through so nicely!

Great pedal , i used an original SD-1 for over 20 years and it's a great pedal for a slightly more aggressive OD than a 808 since it has asymmetrical clipping .
The MXR GT-OD has symmetrical clipping like the old tube screamer 808's , slightly smoother sounding in gain .
Both are great pedals though when boosting an amp , just slightly different flavors .
Like kapo said , the SD-1 style and 808/TS-9 style OD's has the 80's tones all over them.

There is nothing wrong with that at all. Before I bought Bogner, VHT and Splawn amps. My base tone was JCM800 2203 w/6550's and an Boss SD-1 and GE-7 in front. Even after playing though those amps for so long firing up the 2203 brought me back home and put a HUGE smile on my face ;) I need a cap job now and need to get it done...its an 83 so its well past usable...also the only Marshall I kept after having multiple JMP/JCM 2203's and 2204's over the years

It's good to see other people who were double boosting 800's.. i think a lot of people don't think they have enough gain for leads at times but the secret is getting 4 channels out of a stock 2204 by using the following:

High channel, vol rolled back for usable clean
High channel crunch preamp up to 7-8 for that mean 70's rock tone
+SD-1 with gain not set too high so you have higher gain rythm
+ SD-1 + GE7 or other boost for a subtle kick on top of the OD which gives you sustain and fluid leads.

Double boosting was used a ton.. Norum is a big influence of mine and his best tones came from double boosting before he went to modded Marshalls and 2205's.

so the yellow sd-1? I want to try boosting my Egnater seminar head.

Good ol boring find me used on craigslist SD-1 for 30$. Yup, that's the one. Old or new, won't make THAT much of a diff when you get it up loud. Chubtone also made a good point a while back when he said that of all the overdrives, it is nice to know wherever you go, if your kazillion dollar pedal board and boutique pedals break down, you can always find an SD-1 in a pinch. It's true! and it sounds great.

Double boosting really is the key for me with stock Marshall's, and I think more people are learning about it now.

The nice thing about it is that there are no rules. Cheap, boutique, cheap + boutique, overdrive, clean boost, eq, one of each, two of the same, etc.

Whatever permutation gets you what you want to hear.

And the thing about boosting modded Marshalls (or high gain amps), people might ask "But it's modded (or high gain) already, why do you still have to put a pedal in front of it?".

My reply is then you only need one boost and not two.
