Gonna need an attenuator

My new-to-me JVM410H sounds great but thin, until I used the power amp with conviction. Totally different just like my experiences with other Marshalls.

My Engls can get full, open and rich without overly excessive power amp levels - still louder than I want tho, but Marshalls not so much.

Going to get the Koch Loadbox II at some point, so I can use both cabs in my fullstack with one attenuator.

one cool thing I liked when I had jcm was to turn master volume up to 8 on channel 4 red with the pre amp gain at like 1 or 2 . Weird setting but did something I liked

Let me know how it works out! I actually like the JVM210H tone myself, but what you describe is what I hear too - they come off as thin sounding in 90% of the recordings. I’m really interested in the difference after a loadbox.

Interesting you find the JVM thin at low volumes. My buddy has a 205 and the thing sounds kinda dark until you get the master up to 1.5-2. That’s with Marshall G12V’s too.

I started with the master on 3, dialed in each channel to my liking and checked each mode on each channel, mostly to make sure it all worked, and to hear the sounds. Channel volumes 3-5, gain around 6.

Went back to the Crunch channel to play, and it sounded thin. Adjusted the preamp settings which made minor changes to the fullness; put it back to my original settings or close, and started increasing the Master, adjusting resonance and presence and found the open, full sound I wanted.

Comparing it to my Engl E651 Artist Edition 100 with the Master on 3, the JVM sounds thin with Master below 5; when I pushed the JVM master to 6+ it was "there", more open and full sounding like the Engl, and how I remember old NMV Marshalls. To get "there" makes the JVM louder than I can make work here at home.

Going to do more experimenting today, see if I can get 70s NMV fullness at a usable volume...maybe more resonance? If not, then try an attenuator.

Try cranking the channel volumes. I know that’s what he does on that 205. Sounds decent enough.
