Just trying to get opinions. Dont care if its 15w or 300. I heard a cd last night recorded with a practice amp and itvsounded brutal.

In my opinion, you really can't really beat the recording capabilities of a 5150 for metal. Especially for the monies.

A lot of the heavier stuff is recorded with either a Recto or 5150/5150ii/6505/6505+ it seems. Either of those with a v30 loaded cab should work just fine. The 5150/6505s are probably the best bang for the buck... especially the combo version.

This! Another option if you're on a budget is the Peavey Triple XXX. Pretty versatile with 3 channels and active eq. Can get pretty chunky! These also seem to like V30's.

When we recorded our last EP, I showed up with my live rig to see what the producer wanted to use. He destroyed my dual rect; said it's the worst amp to use to record!

My feelings were hurt that day. LOL

Guess I know who not to go to regarding good metal tone. :loco: And to be clear, I mean the producer, not you. He does know that it's one of the most common metal amps of all time, right?

good lord that list is epic. i know some guys on here have half of those amps in there houses right now.

I use 5150 for live and record with JCM800 (and boosts) for both our cds

never found the 5150 to record very well for me

But in saying that, you can probably get decent sounds out of anything with post recording techniques!!

Confused by this. So many albums were recording using those amps. What makes him say that? Was it because they have a ton of low-end? But he's a producer so he should know how to make it sit in the mix. I'd think if he was doing this for a living and dealing with metal bands, he'd be used to seeing Recto's being brought in by guitar players...

Yeah come to think of it, why would he tell you that you can't use your rig and tell you it's the worst amp to record, did he offer you any explanation, what was his argument for saying so?

I have a Splawn Quickrod and a Peavey 5150

The 5150 does not track nearly as good as the Splawn  It sounds thicker and more saturated playing live while the Splawn is dryer/less saturated, but when recording the Splawn sounds a bazillion times better hands down

A multitracked Splawn just crushes imo

what about a really low wattage practice amp????

that give brutal tone???

Weird. The engineer I just worked with said nearly the same thing. Crying the Recs have no gain, sounded thin. But he's never recorded with one personally. Really? So I show up last week with my Rectifier as well as a few other amps and he changed his opinion about Mesa's. not sure where these idiots get their info
