there really needs to be a rule that every guitar player should own a EQ pedal. i know theres the "i spent $$$$$ on my amp im not putting a cheap pedal in front it or in the loop" assholes and they are just that, assholes lol

People who say that care more about how they look than how they sound.

Grabbed that basically new MXR 10 band EQ to decide once and for all.....will give it test over the weekend at some volume
Can't go wrong. Clean boosting aside, it's the ultimate tone-shaper. I'll never part with mine. I have the 6-band as well, and I use that one in front of my OD pedal. But with the Engl, I don't even use an EQ in the loop. Amp sounds great without it.

I love EQs and boosters. I found my happy place in the Orange Two Stroke, which is a fair bit more powerful than a graphic EQ by way of allowing one to fine tune the boosted or cut frequencies.

As far as graphic EQs go, you can pry my Whirlwind Perfect 10 out of my cold dead hands.

This is the truth right here.

For example, to me, a stock Recto plugged straight in is nothing to get excited about, but *nothing* sounds like a boosted Recto with some bass cut at the input. No extra distortion stage needed, just more input volume and slightly cut input bass. Part of that sound includes “a cheap pedal” but there’s no other way to get that specific and awesome sound without it. Other amps won’t do it, and the Recto won't even do it without that kind of boost and EQ applied. Those separate elements are just what that sound necessarily requires.

Might as well say “Do you know how much I paid for this amp? Why should I have to pay for pickups to put in this new guitar body blank too? My amp should sound good on its own without needing those other ‘cheap’ components.” Why? Because that’s just how that sound, which is the total of all the parts operating together, works… you bullheaded moron.

I love the Single Recto with a pair of KT77's, and a tried and true TS-9 in front. The TS-9 is made for that amp.

This. Exactly.

Also, any Mesa Throttle Box users out there? Never tried one myself. It doesn't get mentioned as often as the other EQ pedals.

Ok, I'm a believer....got to spend some time this evening with the MXR 10 band in the loop, honestly I'm kind of blown away how powerful this pedal is. When its set flat its a far more transparent clean boost than either of my Koko Boost, Katana V1 or MXR Micro Amp plus. It' just a shit ton more of the same amp tone and sound with zero coloring. This is absolutely the perfect solution for what I needed it for, wish I would've just started there haha. I could see getting a second one to have in front of the amp just to goose it a bit, EQ aside.
