I hate locking tuners.

I string my fiddles that way too.
 Why?

I have had two different brands fail on me. I feel that they offer no more tuning stability than normal tuners, and as said above tuning issues are more related to the nut than the tuning keys.

Very odd

hardware store: graphite powder in a tube
Walgreen's: petroleum jelly

Mix the two on a napkin real well and use that.

Sperzel on one, and whatever came on a charvel star. The lockdown's jammed in the sperzel and the shaft on the inner lock broke on the charvel.

Put a Graphtec tusq nut on my kids hardtail, it stays in tune perfectly now. It's a MIJ Epi...damn nice guitar for 350 or so. It had a cheapo plastic nut before.

That sounds like like a gunky mess. Yuck.

No different than using the Big Bends stuff.

The difference is that you can make your own, it will last forever, and is way cheaper.

I just use straight graphite. I find that the other stuff gets gunky.

Bump. Anyone notice tone loss when using the nut sauce goo? ...I tend to use graphite once in a while, but it is a little messy, and I have some of the Big Bends stuff from a while back.

The goo makes the strings dead for me. That's the tone loss.

For $10, ‘MusicNomad TUNE-IT Lubricant‘. I got a tube of this for a bone nut to help with tuning stability. I think it’ll take me years to use up this tube. Big ben’s I presume is in the same ball park price wise and quantity.

Yup: this has been my thought as well, but I don't recall exactly if that was my experience. I figured the goo, if too much, wouldn't allow the string and nut to fully connect and cause some issue. But I'm not tech, and lots of people use the goo with success, so go figure... Hence, why I asked.

Cheers.

Everybody has their own ideas and opinions, and even solutions. I use a little bit of pencil graphite without issue.

If you need more than that, likely you need to touch up your nut.

That sucks! To be fair, Sperzels are total shit. I'm convinced the only reason they were ever popular is because they were the first (or at least one of the first) locking tuners on the market.

Hipshot rules. Have them on all guitars.

I use Slick Honey. It's used for lubing suspension components on my bikes. However since its made for linear action it works perfect in the nut. You won't find anything slicker than this stuff. Just a dab with a tooth pick in each slot.
