i’m not a mando guy but have friends who are great.
i do play and love ukulele though, for obvious reasons! we had ukulele class in kindergarten here and thus began my love affair with stringed instruments!

that was cool. i like when an acoustic tune makes you want to pick up the instrument and just play.
this thread was initially a question for those who regularly play acoustic guitars live and what they are using to get a high quality consistent tone they like performing with. the examples i cited were moments that i felt best exemplified great live acoustic sound in my experiences.
Roby Duke (RIP) used to come with just his Avalon gtr and plug into our house Radial DI and it sounded great. this time his gtr had a crack in it so we put blue painter’s take over the crack so it wouldn’t buzz
Paul Clark has quite an impressive collection of Martin gtrs but his Petros is the best acoustic i’ve ever heard in my life hard stop. He too just plugged in to our DI box or sometimes brought a tc scf.
Plus he was a studio vocalist so gas a nice texture to his voice, and is into electrics so we’ve gone to the Baked Potato together to see Mike Landau blaze!
both these linked recordings don’t capture exactly what the sound was like in the house as my console mix was fed via tie lines up to the video room, passing through a yamaha sub mixer where room mics were added, then output through an ART tube compressor before hitting the web streaming/recording computers to get these videos. the sound in the house with subs was much bigger and organic!
Paul told me that when he first got his Petros, he was playing somewhere with Phil Keaggy and during soundcheck Phil asked the soundman to turn Paul’s gtr down in his monitor and Paul wasn’t even plugged in yet! That guitar sounds enormous and was a gift from Bruce Petros to Paul.

Peter offers a transcription of that arrangement of “My Favorite Things” on his website and i got a copy. not that i will ever get through all of it but just to understand some sections is good with me!

This is my old Godin Grand Concert. Probably the best guitar I ever owned. Had to sell it after fell on hard times.

I recorded this entirely with the built in mic on my iphone and thought it came out pretty great actually. Maybe a bit light on bass but I favor bright tones anyway

nice and good point-
most of the time if you are leading the band with vocals/acoustic rhythm gtr, you may not need all that low mid + bass richness like a solo acoustic player likes. it almost takes on a hi hat+ snare percussive roll riding on top of the music. the goal then becomes keeping those limited upper frequencies musical and dynamic, distinct from the vocals and bright cymbals and keys.

i believe that the guys with the lightest touch and stay within a practical range of attack on the instrument generally get the best tone.
a hard one is guys who jump from delicate fingerstyle to mashing. at that point it becomes critical that they either bring their fully realized rig to the party which will limit them appropriately or i will go i to protective limiting utility mode with a compressor on their channel to keep Johnny Tickles from tender eyelashes moments to punching the bass strings trying to launch the sub drivers out of their enclosures

I have never been successful at getting a good live acoustic sound. Never bring one to practice. But do a lot of writing on them.

the one device a friend turned me onto that i had the most luck with was the yamaha AG Stomp box.
emulates different guitar types and bodies, microphones, tunable feedback suppression, nice reverb, delay, chorus, compression, built in tuner/mute, and able to store 3 settings per bank. also able to send phantom power through a stereo TRS cable to power your gtr instead of a 9V by attaching a dummy battery to your 9v clip.
only miss was they didn’t put an XLR connector on the box so you have to plug the output into a DI box.

some things i’d stay away from in acoustic land are the original fishman aura pedal and the original taylor/neve expression system.
we had an endorsement guy come to do a Taylor/Fishman demo event at our church with said rig and he was very adamant that i leave his channel totally flat eq wise. yikes. sounded like a banjo with the mids scooped out. i briefly had the Aura pedal to mess with and it was frustratingly artificial sounding.
i later had a friend bring me his beautiful custom cocoboa Taylor with neve expression system to check out. if you played VERY delicately it could sound nice, but the moment you hit it harder it just became flat and dead. he ended up yanking the expression guts and went with a fishman system = way better.
an onboard system i loved was the takamine cool tube preamp which utilizes an actual preamp tube and sounded lovely. adds sweetness and flesh to the typically strident steel string piezo bite.
