“It was a strange thing with Cherone,” recalls Van Halen. “We were getting ready to go on tour, and all of a sudden I see this John Travolta outfit -- these big lapels and a crazy jacket. He’s like, ‘This is my stage outfit.’ That’s when I realized it wasn’t going to work. But I don’t dislike Gary at all.”

Sure thing, Ed, the faact that III stiffed like a schoolboy on prom night had nothing to do with it.

does he seriously believe what he is saying about michael anthony...come on, ed

My only reaction to what he said is simply, "What a fucking asshole!"

He should just shut the fuck up already...

Not to mention the crazy disco outfits Dave's been sporting lately!

Wait, you don't believe Anthony filmed Ed playing the bass parts of each song before every tour so he could learn how to do it? Sounds perfectly plausible to me.

Does he / did he film Satch before every tour?

I'm in the I respect this guy for everything he's done musically but he's full of shit crowd...

I assume ED pre-wrote and let MA film him playing all of his bass solos too... Guess we'll never know if he got them right.

No shit. Man..... Ed is one of the main reasons I picked up the guitar but he's become one of the biggest assholes in rock music and IMHO a pathological liar. Hurts me to say that but I think it's true.

Also I think Ed and Sammy should both shut the fuck up and stop acting like a bunch of rich cry babies and just go play music with whoever you like. For guys their age they sure don't act like they've learned anything.

Totally agree...the only thing that keeps me interested is that EL34 amp he is going to do. Otherwise, I have tuned him out along with his clown singer.

Totally agree.

Ed is the reason that I dedicated myself to guitar. I was already playing for years when I saw VH open for Aerosmith at the California World Music Festival in '79 and totally blow them off the stage. I couldn't believe what I was hearing and seeing Ed do and I was like, "Wow... I thought I was a good guitar player, but this guy changes everything. I better go practice or I'll never have a shot to play in a band in this town!"

Over the years seeing him play, always with that happy, wasted grin on his face, the guy was my hero.

Now that I know what an unhappy, mess he was the whole time and what he's done to people and said about them, I've realized what an asshole he is - high or sober. The stuff he says in this article is just more of the same nonsense... notice how he contradicts himself throughout?

Steve

He definitely sounds nuts. But then again, most genius composers or artists ARE a little nuts.

Well stated Steve! My feelings as well!! It's a rough reality slap in the face when we realize our hero's are total Asses!

Not only he is lame but he obviously doesn't care what he says or how he says it. I, like many of you, picked up a guitar because of him back in 1985. About all I respect at this point is his innovative playing and the tunes they wrote. I am 100% disappointed in the human being and wouldn't care to read another interview with him again.

Good luck Ed! Hope you can turn things around. Unfortunately I am not going along for the ride to find out.

EVH needs to STFU and just do what he does well, play guitar. Nobody wants to hear this stuff from an uneducated fool. What I find lacking in integrity is slamming people that helped him become successful musically and financially. Very low-class, regardless of whether he likes those guys or not.

I dunno man.....for me, he wasn't the be all end all like he is for some of you; I'm a lot younger than people that saw him in 1985....but I respect the hell out of him.

Dude has gone thru more alcohol and drugs than most other 10 people ever will.....that's gotta fuck with your memory and your brains. I know for a fact as a recovering addict myself that there are things I don't remember or remember differently than the sober (or at least more sober) people that were there.

Not to mention the fact that if you play guitar in one of the biggest rock bands the world has ever seen, and you're the biggest innovator/guitar influence in the world for a certain generation since Jimi fuckin Hendrix, you're going to be used to a certain type of attention or deference from people and eventually, you're going to act and think accordingly about yourself, because everyone tells you to, constantly, for decades.

I think it'd take a man of an indescribable amount of integrity to be who EVH is, have gone through everything he has, and still be the guy you all want him to be. He's a human being, just like us. No one is perfect all the time, or even 20% of the time. I think it's a little bit ridiculous to expect him to be so, just because of who he is to you, or who you think he should be.

I'm in....I still read all his articles, I play his gear (which is fantastic, BTW, as I'm sure many of you know) and his sig guitars are fuckin awesome for me for everything from blues to the most brutal metal I play.

I'm not his biggest fan and I know that, but I'm still going to be fucking devastated when the day comes that I wake up, fire a smoke, hit RT and see that he died. It'll be the end of someone that was an influence on me before I even played guitar and has been there the entire time I've learned and grown as a musician.

Just thoughts after reading the article and then the thread.

We admire people people who have talents that we aspire to but can't achieve...sports, music, business....when they turn out to be less than stellar human beings it's disappointing. But no ones perfect. Just because we look up to them doesn't mean they automatically have to be perfect. It sucks to change your opinion on one of your heroes....but it also keeps them more real..with plenty of flaws like the rest of us..

i respect your thoughts...but there is a big difference in my mind to being an imperfect human being like we all are and making self-serving, self-aggrandizing proclomations for your own gain to the detriment others.

hes had an edge of egotism and asshole tendencies (and, yes, even contradictory statements) from even very early interviews, when ive read them - and i dont even follow him/them that closely.

I'm guessing if for the last 35 years or so a person keeps being told they are a god and every day they meet someone that tells them, "YOU are the reason I play music!", it has to negatively affect their personality and there's just no way to be a well-adjusted, down-to-earth, humble guy--no matter how hard they might try. The creative personality type is prone to insecurities anyway so I'm kind of surprised he does as well as he does.
