great guitar playing but horrible tone-list em

steve howe- too fucking trebley and screechy on all of those incredible early yes lps

yngwie-too much treble on that first lp and the drums also sound paper thin
marching out sounded 10 times fuller and richer

dimebag-it worked well for him but NOT the 10,000 solid state clones he spawned

petrucci-totally generic sounding and just unmemorable/uninspiring

i'll get clobbered for this one but -randy rhoads- rhythm tone always sounded weird to me
hollow but distinct-never really heard anything like that before or since-i realize he triple tracked his stuff and that is "his tone" but that tone is just weird to my ears-lots of mids/ams processing,big british desk etc …it's unique and I know many dudes hate max norman's work

i am not dissing their respective skills nor is this a hate thread, just my not so humble opinions[or in other words -shit talkin']

Gotto agree here. His rythm tones are very average. Could be his touch?

I really don't dislike anyone's tone. There are, however, many tones used by other players that definitely don't suit me and my playing. But I do find it interesting when people talk about how heavy Jimmy Page sounded with Led Zeppelin. Personally, I always thought the heaviness of Zeppelin came from Jones and Bonham. I love some of Page's tones, but I think of them as pretty weak/buzzy, by themselves. Of course, when he added numerous different guitar tracks he added a tremendous amount of dimension to his sound. But I still don't think he achieved "heavy."

Gilbert and Dime. Both of the Priest boys had great playing, but less than stellar tone IMO.

I'm with ya. I hated his recorded tone. The tone on Tribute was cool though. You can hear its similar, but I just don't like the tone they captured on the albums.

I loved Yngwie's tone on that first album.. didn't find it too thin and trebly at all. The drums did sound muffled though. Randy's live tone was killer.. high pierced but cut through. I think i see a trend here, I have been cranking my presence more and more these days. I like my tone to cut through. I never really thought Gilbert's tone was that great. Dime either..Petrucci I totally agree on. Just boring.

They experimented a little too much on Randy in the studio with distant miking and effects.
I heard he had a wah set in one place that was turned 'on' for some of the rhythm/lead tracks.

NO ONE listed so far has horrible tone to my ears. Some have fatter, better tones than others. But all great players who pick the tones that work for them.

Well... let me reverse myself and say that I've never been a fan of Howe's tone. Maybe it's not too bad on the first Asia album though...

GIlbert's tone for the past few years has been MUCH MUCH better than his thin processed tone he used to have. He doesn't deserve to be listed here anymore.


How bout Steve Vai? All those refrigerator sized racks sucked the tone right out of him.

Dimebag. Such a great player with such a shitty sound, well his rhythm's at least. His lead tone was alright i guess.

Absolutely! It's not like he's improved it much since Images and Words, but it still kicks ass (and I'm not a Mesa guy).

I dig Gilbert's tone on "Fuzz Universe". I don't put it up there with EJ, SRV, EVH, etc... but it's pretty decent.
