Reminded me a lot of Petrucci's Mesa tone. I like it for some things, but not all of course. Sounded much better than when I tried a Mark V at guitar center.

He's got 2 mic's on the cab so I Imagine were not just hearing a straight up amp in a room here.

I think the "V sucks" stuff came from folks trying to tweak the knobs like a more traditional amp. You can make the V sound quite terrible with the right combination of twists .
