Guy asks me what amp I use. An SLO. With a straight face he tells me it is a one trick pony. I guess they wanted to sell me a nice $200 Ibanez to play thru the Bugeara they had on sale.

Slam an SLO..... really??

This is the amp the music store wal mart guy wants to pick on?? I just nodded, and this is the store manager..... Give this guy a Craftsman hat, cuz he is a TOOL

Anybody else have any 'amazing' experiences at Guitar Center??

I guess Knopfler, SRV, Lynch, Clapton, Haynes, WDM, and those other guys are a bunch of one trick hacks.....

now i've heard it all...  i here stories about GC nd the like, we don't really have stores like that across here. do these guys even play or are they just salesmen?

the GC store manager here didn't know what a MIDI cable was when I asked where they were......

I'll one up you on that one. I called my local GC a few years ago for something and they didn't know what a 5150 was.

Same thing happened to me, he's like 5150? I've got shit tons of stories, none of them are really funny, it's actually sad when you think about it.

1. I went into studio room and asked about a mic, the guy behind the counter looked around the shelves and then proceeded to tell me that they didn't make it anymore. He said they had replaced it with a new, better mic. To which he presented me with a mic that was $100 more than the mic I was looking for. It was the next level up mic in that series of mics, but the original mic still very much existed.

2. I asked the guy to see some pop filters. He said why? I said because my vocal tracks have plosives. He said well what are you using? SM58. That's your problem... you need to use a condenser mic.

3. I walked into the studio room and presented the guy with a list of studio monitors that I wanted to A/B next to eachother because I wanted to try them before I buy them. He looks me dead in the face and says "Buy the Mackies" and hands me back my list.

4. I asked if they carried the 6505 as well as the 6505+. The guy looked confused for a second, then I was like well the 6505 came out first, then they issued the plus version after. Then he responds, oh, I remember. Well this one is better anyway, you know so many people complained about the originals and ended up returning them anyway. It was a smart move on their part. This is the amp you want.

I am sure there is more. If I think of more I'll post them.

My favorite story is when I was asking about whether or not a specific rack tuner would work on the FX loop (it was designed to go in front of the amp).

The GC guy said "Well, how many watts is your amp?"

And then:

"Is it a Behringer?"

Sad indeed, move into a city and underprice all the music stores that have been there for years, with people who gig and record for a living, then leave us with wal mart employees who cant wipe their own butts, but have all the piercings and hair so they "look" like they think musicians should look.
I hate GC

some guy here...

customer: hey, is this mic any good?
seller: yeah, that one is pretty good
customer: is it microphonic?
seller: fuck yeah, it's microphonic as hell!

:aww: :aww: :aww: :aww: :aww:

just salesmen who look like they might play

Another favorite of mine:

"See, if you buy a more expensive wireless, it will have selectable channels. That's important, because the cheap one may work here, but not in Detroit or Chicago. If you're going to be touring, you need selectable channels so you know that it will work everywhere."

Oh, I forgot, I had one here tell me a JVM was a solid state amp with extreme tube modeling circuitry, the best marshall has ever made     I just shook my head  He would not say anything when I showed him the tubes in the back

Does anyone know what the guys who work at GC normally get paid?

Guitar Center and Sam Ash seem to hire off looks and not knowledge of product. If you have piercings, orange or purple hair and wear tight pants with your boxers hanging out like Justin Bieber, you will get hired.

Had an Employee once ask what amp I played, told him VHT Pitbull, he says "whats that? can it do metal?" I just looked at him, then he says, " you want the ultimate in metal you should buy this Line 6 Spider, it'll be better than what you have"

I just laughed, looked at his co-worker, and said "Really? you guys actually play or you here to try and pick up other guys?" and walked out.

jesus.. you know i was suspicious of places like guitar guitar over here, which is one of the chain stores, they may have shiney eye candy everywhere and be a bit commercial, but all the guys can play, know their gear are as friendly as hell and (one beautiful day) allowed me to try out a 52 les paul and 62 strat they were hiding in the storeroom. i genuinely believe it was because they love guitars and get a kick out of other people loving guitars

NO NO NO NO!!! ebay, early 80's strats are not "vintage" i dont care if they're 30 years old!

They are vintage, just not collectable. ;) or really worth a shit for that matter.

I only apply the term vintage to something old and good, or quirky, or collectable as you say.

i'm even uneasy about 70's strats being termed vintage.

vintage stuff should not:

1) be something people start selling for stupid prices because they're cynical and trying to rip off some kid who doesn't know better

2) have absolutely no redeeming features whatsoever

3) be younger than i am

4) Suck fat hairy balls

:D

That's exactly how I feel. I don't try to hold it back either. They hate me when I go there, and I don't mind it, although it's annoying when I'm trying an amp and they try to come throw me out when I'm not even playing loud. I wouldn't be a dick to them if they didn't try to lie to me all the time. I know gear, I research gear, I live for gear. When they say something idiotic that is not within the realm of personal preference, it's like saying "Air and Water are toxic and you should breathe Helium and drink Mercury" I am embarassed to even go there.
