I don't even need to ask this question at TGP because I know what the answer would be but frankly I'm more interested in what RT'ers think...and I'd like to know the reasons too.

The question is about guitar finishing and your preferences.

1. Nitro only - you wouldn't even consider a guitar that is not nitro-finished.
2. Non-nitro only - you prefer only non-nitro finishes.
3. Mild nitro preference - all things being equal you would prefer nitro, but other considerations come first.
4. Mild non-nitro preference - all things being equal you would prefer something other than nitro, but other considerations come first.
5. Don't care. You want features, tone, feel, and couldn't give two shits about what kind of paint it is...

I really don't care when I am buying a guitar, and I have used both when building them. It really depends on the final look I am after.

A good piece of wood is a good piece of wood regardless of finish. I just try and go for a thinner finish rather than something that has to be buried under thick clear.

NITRO!!!!
NITRO!!!!

I actually believe the hype around nitro... as it thins, the guitar starts to sound better. The Charvel body I refinished sounds better with each passing day.

Mike I picked Nitro because I do think it looks nice. However it's not what makes or breaks a guitar for me. Things like the tone, neck shape, fretwork, heft and overall comfort, hardware and overall workmanship.

Don't care really.

As long as it's not too thick, then it doesn't matter to me.

I pick don't care. If I was having a custom built I'd probably go nitro just because of the hype. But I wouldn't own some really cool guitars if I worried about the finish that much.

Follow up question - all else being equal are you willing to pay more for nitro?

Or from the other angle - if a guitar you liked was finished in nitro would you be even happier if it were poly, but a hundred or two hundred dollars cheaper?

All of these questions assume that the finish is thin, well applied and looks good regardless of what kind of finish it is.

I have to say nitro, the most resonant guitar I have is a nitro finish but I must say I've heard nitro finished guitars that did not ring that good for some other reason probably. In the end, its still the sum of all the parts

I would pay more for nitro, but not a ton more, a few hundred probably. If the other finish sounds good acoustically, and rings well, I'd buy it. Some of the best sounding guitars I ever heard were not nitro finished

I would prefer nitro on a strat that is going to be played with clean to mildly broken-up tones. A poly finish is fine for me when playing in a heavy/loud overdriven mode (I can't tell any difference at this point).

The only thing I hate about nitro is the discoloration over time.

Nitro Schmitro ... I will agree that too much poly will effect tone, but the same mil thickness of each, I doubt there would be much difference.

I don't know enough about it to have an opinion. I would like to know more about the differences in paint though. :D

...and obligatory smart-ass reply, "I don't care as long as it's black".

Dont give a shit for me and nope not paying extra for nitro.

Stringing the tele now Mike, not sure how she will sound yet but damn she is a heavy one......LP crybabies need not apply for wearing this guitar

I honestly have no idea how my guitars are finished, so put me down for the don't care.

I am slightly curious what finishes my strats, Les Pauls, Rics, and Gretesch have....

I would not consider nitro to be the be-all end-all to guitar finishing. As others have said its the sum of the parts. The finish is an important consideration but not necessarily the most important. Caparison guitars sound awesome and resonate loudly but they are not finished in nitro, but Itaru does only finish the guitars in a carefully designed thin finish to meet his tone requirements.

Hence I gave the two-shits vote.

Yep, that was a lunker. What'd you end up doing for a neck?

Thanks for the responses!

My current strat and LP are both finished in Nitro...and they're 2 of the best sounding guitars that I've ever owned, hence my vote for Nitro.

BTW, a nitro finished neck is the secks!!!!!

When did this become such a big deal?  I don't care if it's nitro or not as long as it looks/sound good. I wouldn't pay extra for it either :scared: I have a hard time believing that most of the population of guitarisits could tell the difference in sound, even the seasoned/hardcore ones.
