I knew a luthier up in MN who was making modular guitars like that in the 90's. MEG was the brand, "modular electric guitar". He had a few different bodies you could buy and I wanna say there was a multi pin connector that hooked pickups into the controls. It never took off. Seems like a solution looking for a problem more than anything.

modular is tough if it's proprietary.
at the very least, something like guitar fetish' kwikplug system would be great if other pickup makers supported it or something similar - it let's you unplug/plug in different pickups they offer without soldering. I'd have many more pickups, in many different guitars, if I didn't have to run wires and solder each time. Seems like a simple solution, and I'd buy more pickups than I do.
I can solder if I have to, but I'd rather do other things. There are some guitars that I just live with their stock pickups (Looking at Jackson X series Warriors) because I can't be bothered with replacing them vs a < 5-minute unplug old, plun-in new process.
ES-335? Just get one vs waiting for a PRS copy. Then again, why not a Byrdland or L5?
