Guitars with HORRIBLE Resale Value

Aw man not that guy....

Anything that doesn't say Gibson, Fender, PRS, ESP/LTD or a select few other brands is pretty much gonna be taking a big hit on a resale.

Pretty much everything i buy ends up in the red.
Except for my very early OCD v1 that i bought off the waiting list when they first came out.
I think back in late 04 maybe early 05

Anything made in China or Indonesia will not hold it's value for the foreseeable future.

People used to feel that way about Japan made guitars but that has changed, and rightfully so. Japan makes some awesome quality guitars.

Yet if you bought a Chinese guitar ten years ago, an Epiphone for example, you can likely sell it for more than you paid. If you bought an Indonesian LTD new last year, and sold it this year, you're gonna take a pretty serious hit. The whole market is stupid right now.

Carvin. Which is somewhat surprising because mine is fucking killer.
For whatever reason guys turn up their noses at them but in their heyday that was a really affordable way to get a killer guitar or bass. I used to drool over their catalogs. Their amps also sell for cheap now too. Someone had one up locally on CL for $450 for several months before it moved.

Back in the 90's and again in the mid 2000's I gigged with a guy who used one of their basses exclusively. It was a good sounding bass and he wore a good divot in the wood where you rest your thumb. I'm sure he still has it. Had that natural varnished finish, ebony board, and his name on the truss rod cover.

I had a KOA LB76 It was a great bass. One of the only guitars/basses I have ever sold. I was broke and some 12 year old girl really wanted it and I let her dad talk me out of it. I used to use an RL1000 bi-amp bass rig with two 410s, or a 410/118. Once the 10" drivers started blowing though it was over. The replacements from Carvin were no longer Eminence and were Chinese. I smoked one of them on the very first gig. The amp sounded okay, but not even in the same league as my SVTs.

I still have my TL60. Bone stock. Best playing neck on any guitar I've ever had.

I feel like I see a lot of niche guitars that cost 4-5k new. And I think they go for less than half that when resold. Perhaps some of these are custom builds and that factors into the resale value, but idk.

I remember you telling me the story about that LB76. I bet you could find another one for reasonable if your prowled the internets enough.

If I was still gigging I might. Frankly though since I got my Spector I have pretty much ignored all my other basses. I don't think I've even touched my 4001 since the last gig I played, which was probably 2016-ish.

I know how you feel. Since I picked up that 335 last year I haven't really touched any of my other axes. My white Edwards E-SA needs to go to the luthier for a fret dressing and maybe a new nut. It's pretty nice but still not quite on the level as the Gibson. Maybe when dude works his magic on it it will be. It's a guy JohnnyGtar knows from back in the LA days that lives here now and does great work. Plays a JAMES TYLER too, lol. Small world eh?

Yeah no shit.

Generally, buying used means you keep more money when it comes time to sell. When I see almost new MIM strat prices on FB marketplace I cringe knowing it's gonna be sitting for a LONG time & probably end up at Guitar Center.
