Maybe he is but technical prowess, while a nice talent to have, it's definitely not the litmus test for being a good musician.
I think this forum is more a weedly weedly forum.

Hey, that Randy Rhodes tribute thing he did was pretty cool! :)

Steve

I'm sure it was weedly-weedly-tastic! :D

Now we are comparing Guthrie to Hendrix and giving Guthrie the nod.  I bet even Guthrie would laugh his ass off it that.

So what, I'll listen to what I like and I don't listen to Hendrix or Beck on a regular basis, a lot of their stuff either bores me or I've been burnt out on it. Just lookup some video of Hendrix after he either dropped some heroine or coke and tell me if you'd want to sit through that noise if you could go back in time. I don't care how much of a legend someone is, if it sounded like shit I'd walk out.

Show me a video of Guthrie playing like shit. I won't hold my breath.

Sure.... listen to whatever you like. But like I said I have absolutely no doubt Guthrie would have a good laugh at that.

OK, make sure the next time you're at NAMM go up to Guthrie and tell him how much better Hendrix and Beck are/were than him. I think someone here needs to do it since the same few people always have to bring up Hendrix or Beck and why bother doing it here over and over. You guys go to NAMM and so does Guthrie so go tell him and maybe he would stop annoying you with his elevator shred videos.

The way I look at Guthrie's playing and some of the rig-talk attitude towards him is, "since I can't do it, I'll shit on it"

Yeah, life is too short. I gotta get back to making some "Lay it Down" and "Unchained" clips anyway...

I love all kinds of music, not just technical guitar playing. My favorite music of all time is probably the set of albums the Stones released from '68 through '72. No blistering 80s style guitar solos there, although I love plenty of that as well... I think you'd be surprised at what people like here...

Music is meant to be enjoyed, not rated and picked apart.

As far as memorable or timeless music...
Classical and jazz seems to have hung around very well. As far as pop/rock music from our recent era that will be cherished still a 100 years from now...the only thing I can think of is The Beatles.

I did? Where'd I say that? I recall saying what I prefered or didn't prefer to listen to often. FWIW, I don't have a copy of Erotic Cakes.

I'm just yanking chains. But you have to admit this forum tends towards weedly weedlies. Not that there's anything wrong with that.... :D

I like Guthrie. I saw the Aristocrats just a few weeks ago. Really good show. There will always be a discussion about guitarist vs musician when discussing how good someone is and I tend to lean towards the guys that are innovators that defined a sound. Often those guys are less technical, but clearly not always.

Welcome to the new Rig-Talk where any video of 2 guitars playing warrants a contest and a winner must be declared. Where members brag of their diverse listening preferences but shit on anything they don't listen to. And where anything 80's related must be beaten down with a Hendrix comparison.

I've pondered this same thing and thought that the Beatles may be the only thing to stick in the future from this era. It's hard to say since the world has changed so much in the last 100 years and there's much more access to music today than 100 yrs ago. I can't wait to see what sticks and what doesn't in 100 years. :D

Good grief. I detect butt hurt. You'd think someone punched his AxeFX.

Govan>Hendrix>Guy Mann-Dude>80's Jake>Beck>Aldrich>My uncle in Calgary>TMS Jake>A wooden spoon>Jack Frost

If we can just get this hierarchy worked out, things will be so much easier.

Or that he gets his tones from pedals into a low gain amp and not an amp that's had the piss modded out of it to the point it's so gained out and compressed it plays itself.

Oh wait....

:D
