Actually, I see guys on TGP spend thousands and NOT get tone as good as this.

I disagree. Using a black pick would have created a one dimensional sound. The purple offsets the black shirt and creates different frequencies and overtones that an all black setup could never achieve. Same reason two different speakers are used in a combo amp.
I have charts and spreadsheets for this somewhere. Extensive testing was done.
