A good friend, and studio owner, gave me a ring the other day asking if I'd be interested in some session work for a local solo artist. Of course, my answer was an emphatic YES.

I had a couple of days to learn 3 tunes, put together guitar parts, and write a few solos. Went into the studio last night, and banged everything out in an evening. SO much fun. Easily, the most fun $300 bucks I've ever made.

Gear was amazing. Top notch mics and stuff. But the best part was doing the rhythm tracks. I used my Bogner Shiva 20th Anniversary for one side, and doubled it with a 1978 un-modded Marshall JMP. The combination of the Bogner's warmth and midrange, and the Marshall's bark and clarity, was just incredible. Did the jangly/chimey overdubs with the Marshall and a strat, and the solo's with the Bogner and the LP.

Freakin FUN time. I had fun. The artist was jumping out of his seat at how good it sounded, and the studio owner was loving it. Hopefully, I'll have some more recording sessions in my future.

Here's a quick pic:

It was my very first guitar: a 1991 Gibson Studio, in all black. Ebony board. I know that all the time, people say "oh, my studio sounds better than most Standards..." and most of the times, I smell bullsh*t from a mile away. But in THIS case, this thing just has tone for days.

I've always wanted a silver sparkle guitar. And I got really bored with the plain black LP. So I sent it to Marty Bell, who refinished it for me. (Besides refinishing, he filled in a few knicks and chips too...). He did a sick job. Taped off the edge, giving it a faux-binding look, which really finished the look. Loaded with an old, old Duncan 59 in the neck, and a Duncan custom shop Brobucker (A5, 10K, aged magnet, scatterwound) in the bridge.

That's beyond cool! I'm a sucker for sparkles and nobody does them better than Marty. Thanks for sharing

Cool story Nick!

What would you compare the brobucker with? That's a pickup I'm interested in. Wonder if it's similar to the Wolfetone marshallhsads I already have.

Congrats on the session time and Epic Les Paul, how does one get ahold of this Marty guy!!

Hmm. Hard to say, as I've never tried a Marshallhead.

But from the *specs*, I'm going to guess that it's similar to a Godwood. Right around 10K, but not muddy or honky. Nice and fat. Not particularly sparkly or chimey like some low output PAFs, but more smoky and punchy and thick. Records like a dream.

This might be a bad description, but it's almost as if a Duncan 59 and a JB had a baby. This has the immediate attack and "feel" of the 59. No mush in the low end like a JB, and no saggy delay on the attack like a JB. But it has much thicker, singing mids than a 59 does.

His service, communication, and turnaround time are fantastic.

Congrats Nick, thats awesome!

...and now thanks to this thread I have also found the guitar finisher that I have been looking for!

You guys should see this guitar in person. SICK is not even the word!!!
