I can't compare to Doug R, he's amazing...but here is the rhythm to the intro done acoustically so you can here it without the distortion. Ed actually played that pretty clean. https://youtu.be/cRYXrgaOkaI
That's cool, but I don't think that is how Ed actually plays it. I think he does the string skip to the E on both parts of the riff like Doug is doing instead of that long stretch. Either way, it's a bitch! :)

Sounds good man. Tough song to play for sure. Like Gibson said, you gotta hit that double pick on the root note or it just ain't right.

Listen to this one! From the "board" - fast as hell but Eddie's killing it!

yup...back to the woodshed to get that double note opening riff...it's so friggin fast!

That is just crazy fast. Ed's coke buzz must've really been kicking in for that one!

OK, I've slowed down the isolated track of Ed's guitar and here is what I hear:

The bass note on the E string in both parts of the intro riff is doubled every time except for the first E string note. Do two down strokes on the E string note and 1 upstroke on the D string note for each riff part and end with a downstroke on the D to get the harmonic at the end. That way all the string hopping is on the outside of the string, which is the easiest way to switch strings in alternate picking.

EDIT - Oops - also, each section of the riff (7th fret E/7th fret D and 5th fret E/7th fret D) ends on a double upstroke on the D string!

Hint - It sounds cleaner if you lift your finger off the D string after every upstroke like Doug is doing...

Practice ALOT!

NP - I actually invested some time into this because of your thread and now I know how to play it, so this was actually a great post!

I've been practicing the riff and I'm getting close! A few more weeks and I'll have it wired... Maybe I'll throw it down in a clip then if I have time...

He string-skips for sure, then plays the D with the thumb I believe. I just learned it a million years ago the other way!

Fun topic. That Largo show really highlights how Ed could play his stuff through a Fender Deluxe if he wanted to...really clean sound in that vid.

Again, I didn't bring it up to hammer you. I actually thought you and the band played it really well. I have a really hard time nailing this riff myself. Normally I come from the mindset of you play it how you play it and don't care if it is 100% note for note. It is funny how that one extra note makes the difference on this riff.

DO that! I'm sure you can rip that out!

I need to get to one of your gigs...

This ^^
The guys at work dig your videos. It's a good reason to stop wrenching and rock out.
If I knew anyone on the east coast, I'd go watch you guys pay tribute.

I hear ya sir, I appreciate everyone taking the time to a) view my dumb video and b) comment. You're right...that 1 extra note makes that whole riff...and is such a pain in the ass...lol. Been working on getting that intro better.

may be the coolest thing anyone has ever said about us. Thank you. I'll try to record some more obscure songs for you guys to check out...I don't think VH fans want to see me playing "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" :D ...people would rather see "Dirty Movies" or "Sinner's Swing"

Sinners swing is such a cool tune, but I'm biased  All eds creations just speak to me.

Nice! Hey, what guitar are you playing in that? I just picked up a custom replica of Eddie's Kramer "5150" and your guitar looks similar. I got mine a week ago and had the guy put an EVH Frankenstein humbucker in the bridge before I bought it.

That's a replica of the Kramer Ad Franky that a friend of mine built for me...
