has anyone created a convincing raygun effect on the Axe Fx?

I can't seem to get one that sounds decent. I've tried the various methods in the wiki and asked on the afx forum, but none of them sound convincing.

With my Boss GT-10, I got a very convincing raygun using a vibrato effect.

I've tried delay/chorus/phase and even the vibrato setting in the phaser block. they work when you just pick notes, but if I hit an artificial harmonic, the vibrato effect isnt as prominent in the sound as normal notes even though mix is at 100%.


Anyone else have any ideas? We do Rebel Yell and its always a crowd eye opener when I pull off that raygun part during the solo.....there has to be a way to get a convincing one out of it.

Maybe some kind of two tap delay with a quick reverse gated reverb, everything through a phaser or flanger?

My band does this song also and your right about the ray gun effect. It catches your attention. LOL! I have a TC G-System that I use to pull it off very convicingly. Our keyboard player was going to sample the sound and do it but mine sounded so good the guys in my band said I should do it. I use the Vibrato effect like you mentioned. I have it set up for a pretty high speed and 100% in the mix. Works like a charm. I tried a tremelo effect with the same settings and it sounded good but all the guys agreed the vibrato effect nails it. Keep tweaking the speed on your vibrato. The speed has to be just right for it to sound like the effect on the song. Good luck.

i've got the rate and depth about as high as they go...it just doesnt seem to have the ray gun type sound for it. the whammy is an interesting idea...set it to an internal controller and adjust the min/mid/max depth to get the right settings....that could work.

Here's my settings for the "RayGun effect" from my G-System: For the lead itself I have a little bit of chorus and slight delay and for the Ray Gun part I kick in the Vibrato set at: Speed:14.5 Hz Depth:100% That's it. I don't know how well the settings will translate to another peice of gear but setting the Depth at 100% and getting the speed relatively hign to match the oscillation of the actual sound on the song should get you there. If any of you have a G-System and would like me to email you the preset file for your Vyzor Editor let me know. I also uploaded it into the preset vault on the TC Electronics site. Good luck!

You should be good setting the mix at 100% but the rate is what you need to adjust. Set it to high and it won't sound right. Set it to slow and it won't sound right. You have set it just right to get the oscillation to match the speed of the effect on the album.

I use my PRS SC to play this song and do the pickup selector toggle switch trick, but really fast.

I've tried the rate/depth settings at various spots. Just doesnt get that warbly ray gun sound to me. I'll keep tweaking but it seems when I hit an artificial harmonic it loses its raygun effect and just seems like the effect is in the background.

I've tried different placements in the chain as well...up front, just before the drive/amp after the amp, after the cab...lol...

Oh another thing about this effect in the solo. You need to hit the right note while using this effect. Pinched (artificial) harmonic at the 9th fret on the G string ( E note) works great. The solo is basically in B minor pentatonic so I play it at the 7th position so that's why I hit the E at the 9th fret. You don't have to use the pinch harmonic but it seems to sound a little better with it.
