Has anyone had their fat Gibson neck shaved down?

Not sure how doable depending on the truss rod positioning. My Les Paul Special (‘22 model) that I love the sound of and invested in a jumbo refret has a mid/late 50’s style neck and it’s starting to wear on me a little. Considering I love everything else about the guitar was considering getting the neck shaved down to a full C, but certainly not slim taper.

Special is one of the few models I would consider this on, seems like it would be pretty expensive unless you did it yourself though

That may well happen but I don’t care for the 50’s (same issue) or 60’s neck on current Standards that would come with P-90’s. The tributes that came with P-90’s aren’t bad not only are they stupidly high on the used market they don’t really look all that great to me aesthetically and I dig my TV yellow.
I know previous gen LP Specials like early 2010’s have a smaller neck but going by the 2011 Junior I used to have it might be slim taper and they had kind of a nappy TV yellow back then.

Ugh…99 out of 100 guitars have tiny necks, just get one of those and leave that unicorn for us big guys

This is one of the reasons why I went for the model I went for, the 2020s classics have a really, really slim 60s style neck

I actually enjoy the big baseball bat style lp necks, but i can't deny that for endurance at gigs the slimmer neck does work

I got a super deal on the thing so it’s whatever, if I could get it slimmed down though I think I’d give it a shot

Carpal tunnel? A friend just had CT surgery and was back at work like nothing happened in 2 weeks. Contrast that to another friend who is an accountant on the PC all day and had to have an extensive surgery where they removed a bone from the wrist. He couldn't use his hand for almost 2 months. Cut his sex life in half!

I've got a rough trigger finger in my strum hand, tennis elbow same arm, bad arthritis same shoulder. Some days I can barely play or raise that hand / arm.

Have you considering gaining about 200 lbs so your hands swell to the size of oven mits? Then any neck will feel slim!

I would say def consult a luthier and move forward, they will let you know if its ok or not. If everything is perfect but that customize it to your needs. Obviously it could affect resale.

no, i smashed my pinky into a nub when i was a kid, and that messed up the ligaments from my finger to my elbow as my hand was still growing, now my hand wants to be in a clenched fist position all the time, so trying to stretch my fretting hand much just dosent work. Most guitars i get by ok, but my LP puts my wrist and hand in the total worst position to where i just cramp up and get these weird pops in my wrist that scare me.

Sorry to hear that man. I hope you find a way to make it work. A side effect of my problem causes me to basically get tendonitis everywhere. I get those loud pops in my strum elbow. They are so loud, the cats jump off the couch and run for cover.

My friend shaved his LP neck down. Refinned it himself, turned out nice. It can be done. My LP Special has a gigantic kinda V shaped neck. Kinda fun to play and it sounds incredible. It’s part of the sound with these.

I’d say don’t do it unless you really plan to stick with the guitar (which you said you would). Point being that a stock guitar will sell for more than a modded one and you can buy a new one that you like on.

If you decide to proceed, go with a luthier who knows what he’s doing. If he botches it, you’ll be stuck with it.
