Heavier strings sound better; it's a scientific fact.

String gauge tells me a lot about a player. ;)
What does it tell you?

Steve

Seriously? A man of your age and experience is asking this?

Are you being sincere or is this an attempt to bully me into making discriminating remarks?

I can elaborate, generalize and state the obvious if you wish. :scared:

I guess I'm an idiot as well??? What can a string gauge tell you about a player when Billy Gibbons uses 7's or 8's while SRV used 12's to 13's??? Both great players with great tone right? So, yes, please enlighten us.

Less about tone for me and more about feel. 9's can feel a tad too light or harder to grip on the higher strings for me. I like 9.5 or 10 but hate the G string no matter what and want to go lighter on that one. Odd I know! There are so many more factors that go into good tone than just the gauge. Feel, attack, amp, guitar, pickups etc etc

Use a wound G. It really makes a huge difference in feel and stability.

GHS TnT Boomers, 10-52 with the E,A,D out of a set of .010's and the g,b,e out of a set of .011's hence the title thick n thins.. Been using them for at least 10 years on all of my guitars ... Best damn string out there.. I like the tone of thicker strings, they just seem to resonate a little more.

Those players are masters. I wouldn't even begin to dissect them. I'm talking about the average player posting here.

On a side note, watch the last few Top DVD's and listen to Gibbons bend sharp in about every solo.

Will do. I have a few ZZ DVD's as you can probably guess. I have never picked up on an over abundance of sharp bends , but that doesn't mean anything.

Ok, I play 9-42's. What does that tell you about me?

Being from OK tells me more about you than the string gauge. Hook 'em Horns

.9s on my Custom 24 and Fenders, .10s on my Les Paul and McCarty. It should be against the law to use .9s on a Les Paul...

Hybrid slinkys, standard 9 set or 10 set. 8 sets are too flimsy, not my type. But it would just mean playing with a lighter touch. Whatever..

It's rock and roll. Yeah one feels a little different but I'm not so much of a diva as to freak on it. I usually buy replacements per the setup sheet on the guitar. Once in a while I will get a guitar set for Eb and upsize and raise the action a smidge.

The tone is in the $150 cable anyway, everybody knows that... And maybe the beam blocker, or possibly the black nail polish.... If you don't have the right pup rings, don't even plug in.

Bitches

:aww:

One of my fave guitar sounds of all time is Yngwie's Strat-Marshall tone, and he strings with an .008 at E flat on the top.
Jeff Beck used 8's back in the day, and the Rev Billy G uses 7's! I don't hear anyone complaining about their tone!

I'd say that you may feel more comfortable with this or that type of strings and therefore you "sound" better. I found more impact on my sound from the construction of the strings (like the EB Cobalt) than with their size. IMHO, YMMV.

Finally some real logic! BOOMER!!!!!!!!!

To each his own. I dig the tone of lighter strings. 11's and up sound like woofy shit IMHO.... :dunno:

its been so long that I used anything other that 10-46 GHS Boomers (since about mid 80's) so I can't say for sure. I did it because I always ended up snapping the high E string on any guitar with 9's.

Now a higher action for sure does sound better ;)

I've played .52-.11s for many years now. Started on .9s, then went to .10s. For me, it's more a matter of tension. I like the stiffness of the .11s. But, lately, I've gone to .10s on some of my guitars just to lighten up a bit. I'll probably go to 10s on all my guitars eventually.

Never noticed the woofiness, Todd, but you might have a point. I'll have to see if I notice any added brightness going to .10s.

No scientific proof whatsoever!!! A myth and is personal perferecne. Some players with great tones used lighter gauge strings. I prefer 10's myself, but it is more of the feel than the overall tone. I use 10's since it it what I like!!!

EVH - 9's
Carlos Santana - 9's
Jimmy Page - I believe 8's
Billy Gibbons - 8's and 9's and even 7's

Given that a wide range of great players I love to listen to and respect use everything from 8s to 13s and everything in between, yes, I was seriously asking. And frankly, I don't see how asking is bullying you in any way. You made the comment, so I'm interested in what you have to say...
