Heavier strings sound better; it's a scientific fact.

Anyone know what Billy Gibbons uses.....?

7s, 8s

That alone shoots a gaping hole in the OP topic.

Spin Tres Hombres and let us talk of awesome tone.

Or one of my favorites

Fool For Your Stockings

I play like a cave man so anything too light will go out of tune for me, thick strings also have a bit more life and character while playing unplugged. 11s for E or D standard on my PRSi, 10.5s for my 25.5" super strat (same tunning) and 10s with an added 60 and 80 for my ERGs (27" scale). I feel like that is a pretty standard set up. 9s feel okay but there is definitely some stiffness missing. I would use an 8 for high G in NST and really nothing else.

Dudes who make statements like this are usually poor players. Course I can make blanketed statements too. How about this one: Guys who spend $300 on pickup rings thinking its gonna make a difference in their tone or make up for their lack of skill are posers.

I thought that different string gauges were primarily used to keep a constant neck tension when alternate tunings were used.
If your strings feel different then it probably affects the way you play thus altering the tone. This is the only real difference that I can detect in string gauges as far as sounding different is concerned.

Dudes that draw idiotic conclusions like this are usually "Kroegers."

Nobody has made one claim that the purchase of rings improve tone. That is such a tired and idiotic comment

My Ibanez sounds exactly 83% better since I've switched from 11's to 10's.

is that a sonic blue carpenter in your avatar?

Like it or not lightening boy, deal with it.

That's WRONG, but that's okay. Heavier strings only sound better, at sounding like heavier strings. Lighter strings sound better when going for a lighter string result. See? Hope that clears it up. Better depends on the result one expects, and is (in this context) purely subjective.
This...

Been using 10's for a very long time now... I actually like the feel of 9's, but they seem to get unacceptably flubby if you need to de-tune a bit... 10's seem slightly better in that department.

Eh, use what works :)

Yeah, but Shea (Telephant) is a bad ass and plays and sings like a bad ass. He also doesn't put up with much nonsense and calls it like it is. Exactly the sort of guy RT needs to come back here and start breaking his boot off in someone's ass when they get too silly.

You staying Shea? I hope so. This place needs you.

Well in that case, I humbly recant. Being a bad ass gives instant credibility to all comments made!!! I need to start using that as my excuse as well

Yet to some (me) One's "badass" is another's (mine) yawn. The $300 PU ring analogy to string gauge and it's effect on tone is HC drival at best.

As to the OP, he dropped his troll post and left. Long lists of light gauge string playes show his point to be yanked from his anus. Nice try though
