Help me decide what pups for my charvel?

Hey folks.

I just bought this Charvel made in Japan not long ago. It's a Charvel Preditor, and has a hum in the bridge and a rail hun stacked in the neck at an angle. Well, I've had it about 6 weeks now playing every day or every other at least a little, and I've decided although I like the bridge pup a little, it's a tad too muddy on the big strings, and about perfect otherwise. It cleans up well, etc, but again, too flabby on the big E and A strings in my humble opinion especially with rhythm. So, I'm working on changing the strings today and I'm assuming because of the looks of the bridge hum that someone had replaced it, but I couldn't put my finger on what type of pup it is. So, I take it out and I can't believe my eyes, it's the original Charvel J90 I think it said? Anyway, it says Charvel on it, etc, and had a letter and 90. It's not a bad pup as I stated, but I want a little more output, or at least equal, and I want a little more high-end or mids on the top strings. I need the bass strings to be tighter I guess I should say. Then I don't really like the 5 way switch with all the options and the rail hum in the neck position. Although it sounds great, I don't like the looks, and I want a true single coil, but something that doesn't have hum.

So, I've narrowed it down to the following:
I have a Duncan Distortion, and I have a Dimarzio PAF Pro which I really like as well, but I also have a Duncan Active Metal humbucker but with the wire removed to give it more of a standard output.

I'm thinking I'd like to stick actives in it because of the all the reasons I like actives such as hearing every note, pushing the signal with loads / feet of cord, etc, etc,. No worries about being the ground if something goes bad in a gig with bad wiring in the building. I've been shocked bad before and I hate that!

However, that said, I also like passives such as the distortion class hum's from Duncan, and the Dimarzio Distortion, but especially the Super 3 Dimarzio bridge.

I want to be able to either run full blast in the bridge or just single coil in the neck for pretty clean stuff.. but I need the same volume. So, (sorry for the length of this post) I'm leaning toward either using the Duncan Active in the bridge or buy an EMG 85 which I really like and then get an EMG S or SA for the neck. I have loads of room for the battery, etc, I'd also of course get another switch and this time I'd get a 3 way or even 2 way if possible. What you guys and gals think? Any suggestions? This is my "Goto" guitar because it has a schaller floyd and just stays in tune forever and sounds great it seems and sustains like an LP for some reason. It's also light in weight, and just a joy to play with the big jumbo tall frets, etc,.

Any suggestions would be great. Are there other high quality actives out there besides Duncan and EMG?

Check these out man. They are passive but sound like actives. Really tight. And light weight as well.

As for the single coil. These look good as well but require a little bit of a mod to your guitar. I don't think you want to do that.

But I do have a Lace Sensor Burgundy. It's the best single coil I have ever played. But I'm just not sure what it would sound like in the neck. If you are interested in the Lace stuff shoot their Tech Support an email. You'll probably get Reggie. Just tell him what you are looking for and he'll help you out.

Ive had a few predators and 3dr's. Still have one in the closet that i bought in '89 new.. When i was playin death metal it was emg 81 and an emg single in the neck. The neck slot is tough cause it not routed for a strat base plate, so you have to find something that will fit that slot...

Having said that i ended up with a duncan distortion, which is kinda my goto pickup...

Hey Traveler. I thought about those. I actually have talked to the same person at Lace. I like their designs, etc, but I love Actives for several reasons. I'm only concerned about the neck pup working if I use a replacement. I'm not sure what will fit. See the next persons thread about the same..

Hey Mchn13.

Did you have any problems with the EMG singles working in the neck position of your preditor or 3DR may I ask? I have a duncan Active that I thought I'd throw in the bridge, but then I'd still need a single coil and since it's also active I thought about an EMG S series, but I want to make sure it fits.. Do you know?
Thanks

I looked at the pup that is in it and it is the Jackson 90 thing. Says Charvel on it, but it's the same thing, but this one doesn't have a cover, and all that I've seen do have, but maybe someone took it off. The original owner had this thing since it was new in 90 or 89. I remember him telling me about the guitar and how much he loved the trem since it's the schaller floyd. I love it. It stays in tune once setup. I have it tuned to standard 440. Love it. May some day get a USA Custom neck on it and or a warmoth strat reverse head stock and scalloped neck for fun.. I think it would look cool..

I am a huge fan of the Super and Super 3 myself and the PAF Pro is great. A good Choice for an in between is the Evo Neck model. Has all the chunk of a Super 3 in a sense but not the output. I enjoyed that pickup when I had it but sold the guitar it was in.
I'm not a fan of Actives. I like to hear others play on them but they don't fit me.

PAF Pro as a rythm pup is cool but my ear got tired of the glassiness and vowel like sound it had. I popped the AT-1 I had spare back in it and i've stuck with it. Tight on the low strings, good output, not too bitey on the top strings.

Hey there! I have an old model 5FX with EMG's in it (85 - Bridge SA - Neck it's slanted in the neck) but I'm going to all passive. I've been wondering about the factory slant route in mine too and wondering what Seymour Duncan single coil would fit there with no mods and sound really good (Cool Rails/Little 59 neck single coil?) So far it seems for the bridge pup replacement a lot of guys have been recommending to me the Seymour Duncan TB-6 Distortion Trembucker so I'm most likely going with that. Mine is tuned to drop B right now but if I ever take it back up to 1/2 step E tuning I'm hoping the Duncan Distortion will still sound really good.

Duncan super V, it is a beast! real fat and thick sounding yet with clarity, definition and great touch sensitivity for lead work. cant beat it!!!

Yeah the emg single fit without routing. I did rout one i had so that a lil '59 would work.... Then ended up not liking it... Not alot of singles fit that hole.. Better to stay with the charvel single and get a passive bridge..

Looked up some info on the model 5fx looks like they originally came with a Jackson J95 bridge humbucker and a J100S slant neck single coil. I did see on some site where a guy had what looked like either a Duncan Hot Rails or Cool Rails neck single coil and possibly a Duncan TB-10 Full Shred humbucker?

What is the Duncan Super V? Did you mean the Super D? I have one, but it's not F spaced, but I think I'll go with actives for several reasons.

Well, I've almost for sure decided to go with actives for several reasons. This is going to be my "GOTO" metal guitar and I'm so used to the Duncan AHB 2 I have or had in a strat that I love the tone and the responsiveness I got out of it. I also love the fact that I don't need a noise gate of any type. It is just super quiet. I do however love the Distortion class passives, but they are too noisy typically. Also, I hate getting shocked and I hate being the ground on passives! That's just too old school for me. I hear folks say that actives are sterile, but I think they are just different and folks aren't used to them. I love the harmonics and the clear note for note definition I get from them, etc,.

So, now it's just a matter of what actives to use. This guitar has the slanted single route in the neck and it will work with EMG S, or SA which is what I'm for sure proably going to use. I have the Active Duncan and that would save a few dollars, but not sure I want it in this guitar. I think I might go with the EMG 85 or the 60A. I love Alinco magnets it seems in passive pups at least, and I like that smoother tone they seem to give. I also like the EMG 81 and others, but it seems like EVERYONE uses the 81 and I want a different sound even if just a bit different. Has anyone tried the EMG 60A or HA or anything like that in a bridge hum position and if so what did you think of it? I'm leaning toward the 85 as it's a safe bet. I love that pup in a Kramer I had and I had one in the bridge of an Ibanez too. The latter had the same basswood body as this guitar which is also basswood. I think it just fits. This also has the schaller floyd and I think it brings back or gives back some of the low end. Any suggestions would be great..
Anyone use the 18 volt mod and what's the advantage?

The blackouts are awesome for metal! My other charvel predator had a set in it. Tuned to b-standard through a 5150 and a dual rec... Brutal rig.

Thanks man. I'm going to be using this thru either a Jet City 50 watt Soldano Designed amp, or a Peavey 6505+ 1 x 12 for small gigs, etc,. So sounds like you like the actives too. I play old school stuff from the 80's glam period and blues and heavy rock, but I also do originals, and we have extended jams at my brothers place in the boonies drinking beer and just having fun and I love the actives I've used in the past. They seem to do everything I want except maybe SRV type cleans, etc,.

Thanks man.
