Good People!

Can anyone advise on the best tubes for the Herbert? Peter? EL34s? KT66s? etc.? Before you say it's a matter of preference, which ones give the ballsiest sound? Also, please give the numbers for biasing after the tube change.

For preamp tubes, I understand it's the 12AX7s but, is there any manufacturer's 12AX7s better than the others.

Thanks.

EL34-SED power tubes, best quality You can get.
V1, V2 Highgrade 12AX7-C
V3,4,5,6 Selected 12AX7-C

Yes

Chinese preamptubes, every dealer have a different description.
They are made by Shuguang. Please look for good quality.
I use only 50% of them concerning the sound.

Thanks, that's some good info.

I have a set of GT power tubes laying around. Have you ever tried them?

This whole tube thing is driving me nuts!

Power tubes:

They have 3 options for SED EL34 - average, early & late distortion. So which one should I get?

Also they have matched pair & quad. Do I get (matched quad & a pair) or (3 pairs)? Or (3 matched quads) & use 2 pairs from each quad & switch with the other pair on my next tube change?

Preamp tubes:

They have Shuguang 12AX7 9th generation & 8th generation. Which one do I need?
Also they have standard test & balanced triods for each, I have no clue what this means....

In addition: are there any trustworthy techs in Chicago area you would recommend for this & my LED light issue?
I have had a bunch of horrible things happening during shipping lately, I really don't want to risk this bad boy!

get late distortion. they're higher quality and recommended by peter.

its for an herbert right? you need a matched sextuplet. like a triple rect... or get 3 pairs of matched tubes, tell them (doug's, tubestore, tube depot) that its all for the same amp, and they should match the pairs together.

i think peter recommends the 9th generation Shuguang. you don't need balanced triodes in any position. but some people use them for the mixer and loop driver, the return driver, and especially the phase inverter, which is V4, V5, and V6 on the Herbert. the phase inverter (V6) is the most important for this, and it only costs a couple of bucks extra for a balanced 12ax7, so i say do it.
