I've been on this huge Devin Townsend kick lately so I decided to tune an axe to open Cmajor (C,G,C,G,C,E) which he used on all the STY stuff (7-string content was CMajor with a low G)
and his older solo stuff.

I can't play shit in this tuning!   Usually if I use an alternate tuning I'll have a song or two written within an hour. I know new tunings take practice and some getting used to, but I really don't know how he makes such dark music with an open major tuning...granted he's been doing it for the duration of his guitar playing life.

Anyway, it's a cool tuning but I will need to relearn chord shapes for sure. And no, I'm not doing this because I'm a devin fanboy(well not entirely) I just like to try new tunings. Try it! It's refreshing

Ive had my guitar (only one i have right now) tuned to Devs tuning for awhile now. It was really akward at first but dosent take to long to figure it out. I learned alot of Devins stuff and it helped me figure out where to go a bit easier.

And yes im a huge Devy Fanboy.

I tried the open C awhile back.....Um....it was like starting guitar all over again! hahaha

I switched back.

If I had more guitars, I would try it again though.

Can you point me in the direction of any quality dev tabs? Or did you learn it by ear? Either way I'm going to give it some more time.

That should get you started. Some tabs on there are really good and others are terrible. I would also watch out for the tabs you have to download. To tell you truthfully the deep peace tab on there gave my pc a virus so stay away from that one. I found the tab for deep peace in the hevydevy forums though with a bit of searching. Hope that helps you out.

try to get a hold of devins "great average guitar" instructional video
he goes quite a bit into his playing
holding a power chord is like a sus 4 I think in that tuning

Nothing wrong with that
I've been sort of redefining what I think of as "heavy" music. Something like truth or even some of Devin's lighter stuff holds so much atmosphere and emotional weight that it hits me a lot harder than the same old, tired, rip your face off metal riffs that everyone is doing. (although I still love me some face rippin)

Another band I've been into for a long time now is Karnivool. Tons of ambient coolness going on behind solid modern rock/metal and a great vocalist. Check out the Themata album.

That's almost the same tuning that I use as a default. It kicks! After getting used to it regular E is a freakin boredom.
