I love the Direct Drive. I put one in front of my Mark III and it has been there ever since but I must say the TS9 is now on my want list.
Nice comparison and as always great playing.

The direct drive and the TS9 are the 2 i like best in that video. The bad monkey is a close second.

When people look for a modded Marshall type sound, they need to look at a Jubilee. You can spend a lot on the '87s but the black tolex '88 and '89s can be had for reasonable prices. And they will always be collectable. I have a 2554 combo that I put the chassis upside down in a smallbox headshell and I will put that up against ANY modded marshall out there..with a boost of course. I have this Cameron Aldrich that sounds great but I honestly like the Jubilee a little bit more..

Totally. The Jube has a huge bottom end compared to anything they made in the 80s and 90s and with a boost gets into "modded" territory quick. On the low gain side, I have put it up against my PTP '73 Superlead and can't tell the difference between the two when going for plexi type tones. The "Rhythm" channel cranked up is awesome for that kind of stuff.

Thanks, man. I dig the DD a lot, too. The TS9 is always the one though...just has the sound.

I will try those settings Killertone. I typically run my output master at 4 and lead master at 6. Input gain between 5 to 8. In the last band I was in, I was able to crank my 2553 a lot more, to about 6 on the output master, man did it sound good there. At the time I was running it through a Marshall 1936 212 cab copy with 2 Classic Lead 80's. I now run mine through the matching 212 with 2 WGS ET-65's. I changed the back panel to a plywood back, that helped tighten up the sound considerably.

I have been kicking around putting new electrolytic caps in mine, but the line if it ain't broke don't fix it comes to mind.

Yeah, I wouldn't do the cap job unless there was an issue.

It depends on the amp but I typically like to run masters high and channels low. Some amps don't sound good like that though. I guess it is the design of the master volume. My JVM master likes to be cranked but on my 2205 I crank the channel and run the master accordingly.

I love a stock TS9. It's got a nastiness that's oh so pleasing. That Jub sounds killer.

Agreed!

I would love to know your settings to make the jubilee sound closure to the superlead. I tend to get stuck in a rut with most amps, where I stop tweaking and just play the amp, but this also means that I miss out on some tones that I may enjoy.

I keep meaning to try my alex attenuator with the jubilee. The Jubilee sounds more special when you can get some volume with it.

This definitely likes volume. Not a huge fan of attenuators, although I have heard that the Alex is one of the best, but it would be interesting to hear the Jube on the rhythm channel cranked through one. I can tell you that it is hard to be in the same room with one without an attenuator!  Fucking LOUD! Easily as loud as my '73 Superlead and I thought that was the world's loudest amp.

Yeah i'm not sure i could run my volume that high in my place my neighbors would kill me or at the very least explode

I tried to talk Pops into it when you were a kid but he wasn't biting!

That was awesome!

Gotts say, for my interests I think the Bad Monkey sounded the best.

I liked the added presence of the Bad Monkey.

All the other ones sounded darker and much more similar. I liked the boost at the end second best, the TS9.

Jason what are your settings for that video? the amp sounds amazing! which tubes do you have in yours? i'm getting ready to install some Ruby BSTR

No idea what is in the preamp...haven't changed them in forever. The power tubes are original Tesla (not JJ) EL34s. They are killer tubes and I like them just as much as the famed Mullard XF2s.

Sounds good. Do you mind sharing your amp settings? I have never gotten my 2553 to sound that heavy. I have run and eq in the loop and usually boost with a maxon od808, which is probably why the Tubescreamer is my favorite in your clip.

I think the 2555 has the best EQ of any of the amps they made in the 80s. I have a 2205 as well and the eq is not as sweet as the 2555. Owned many 2203/4s and feel the same way.

Here are the settings for the clip.

I can actually make it even tighter and brutal but that wasn't the point with this video.

I finally got a chance to try those setting on my jubilee, sounds great. Mine has an extra knob on the back to adjust clean volume and I notice with the channels turned down and the output master up, that the clean and distortion is less buzzy and just sounds better. I don't feel like I need an attenuator as much with the output master up and the channels down. In my last band I ran the silver jubilee at 6 or so on the output master, and the channels up pretty high, but at home I had to knock it back to 4, where it just doesn't have the same magic.

Thanks for getting me to experiment again with my own gear. I kind of feel like I just got a new amp and I have had the jubilee a long time.

Very very cool. Glad you tried them and liked it. Before I did this clip I hadn't turned on my Jubilee in close to a year. I forgot how awesome this amp is and I feel like I got a new amp even though I have owned it for 10 years!
