....a run for it's money?

What higainers out there today would DEFINITELY give a nice blackface fender or a nice vox a run for its money when it comes to clean and/or slightly overdriver tones ?

I can tell you this, IMO Herbert's or XTC's cleans are just as good, but Fender's cleans they are not. They have similarities, but they are clearly different to my ear. I also dig Marshall Plexi's cleans a whole lot. It is also important to understand that cabinet/speakers for great cleans should not be closed back loaded with v30.

Also it'd be nice if you'd clarify as what qualifies as a hi-gainer in your book.

you know the typical hi-gainer (Boogie MKIV, Recto, Diezel Herbert/VH4/Einstein, Framus Cobra, Fryette, etc etc)

Custom Audio Electronics OD100. They can sound very "Fender Like".

Budda SD18 sounds very voxy on the clean channel to my ears.

Yep, Bogner Shiva IMO has better cleans than any Fender I've ever heard/played. (Shiva 6L6)

+1 on the 6L6 Shiva

The Framus Cobra has beautiful cleans as well.

Rivera M60 M100, Fandango, etc. I have an M60 that probably doesn't qualify as a true 'high gainer' -- at least in modern terms, but when goosing it with a SD-1 it's crazy over the top gain.

And the reason I bring this up is, of course, the clean channel is absurdly good. I'd stack it up against any black face any day.

Not bad for $600!

Laney VH100R comes to mind. Great clean on that amp. The clean on the Marshall 6100 30th anniversary was really nice too.

Part of the issue with channel switching amps is that the cabs/speakers that they are typically run through are not the most ideal for clean and low gain in my experience.

Take my mark IVA, it sounds great through my Fender Bandmaster 212 opened back cab with Weber 12A125A's for clean, but through the cab the high gain of the mark IV just is not right. Even the metal grill 412 cab I run with my mark IV usually, I have compromised and closed both sections of the cab. The R1 is not as nice and airy, but I like R2 and the Lead channel better.

Even though I'm not a fan of the high gain modern tones on them the Roadking has fantastic clean and medium gain tones on channel 1. The tweed setting with hum's can even do great 70's hard rock. What's great about these amps is that with the speaker switching on the back you could have an open 2x12 for your clean/medium gain sounds and a closed 2x12/4x12 for you modern sounds and the amp switches automatically for you.

Bronco - who's the model in your avatar? Jayzeus....!! Name please.

Oh, right, um...Shiva and believe it or not, any of the 90's Peavey Classic series amps. Surprise tone makers those Peaveys.

V.

yeah the CAE stuff is great, and +1 on the rivera stuff as well, they get a great clean sound, although i dont really get along with the overdrive tones

I can get clean tones out of my Triamp that would rival most fenders. And it's slightly overdriven tones are just as nice.
