Use high output pickups with high gain amps and low output pickups with low gain amps....how much more simple does it need to be?!!?

Thats pretty much the opposite of what nearly everyone on this thread is saying.

The SD Distortion is not that hot :gethim: ;) It is my new "JB" as the JB used to be my go to pup, I find the disto to be a tad more open and articulate.

I'm just here to set you guys straight.

Dont forget to spend alot for the pickups too.

and there is only the Invader thats hotter in the Duncan line. Unless you go with a Metal Livewire.

I need it for playing my JMP though, I dont have the skills some of you have

For me it just depends. When I had an Uber I thought that amp sounded best with lower output pickups. On the flipside, when I had a Herbert I like what I got best from hotter pickups.

I wanted a better solution and considered buying another guitar just for the project.

Then i had an epiphany. I don't use tone pots. I remove them for a tad more gain and to shift the resonant peak up a little higher.

I disassembled the guitar . I turned the volume knob to a good crunch sound and measured the resistance, i then did the same for clean.

Lastly i wired an on/on/on for the three values of resistance. I then had a clean crunch and wide open switch on the guitar that served my needs flawlessly.

that seems like a great idea, i hardly use the tone pot at all, usually find the volume pot better for rolling off highs /attenuation

i usually have two volume knobs one for bridge/neck, and adjust each accordingly for more clean or whatever, but picking dynamics usually the big one

this has got me thinking tho =0
time to research the effects of taking off the tone knob

I tend to use the JB a lot these days, which to me is medium/hot output.

However, i find that EMG's can work well too because while they are very hot... they have a very clear, almost clean response IMO. So while they have a ton of output, it doesn't feel anything like when you use a hot passive into a high gain amp. Very hard to describe..

And ya see? This is why everything is so subjective and personal - I am really disliking my 81s and 85s in my ESP FR-II (EMG), I find them sterile.

So it goes, one mans treasure......

While i like the EMG's, i will agree 100% that they can sound sterile with some rigs/setups! When that happens, i go for passives

The Suhr Aldrich is a hot pickup but still kicks ass because it has a vintage tone.

That's why I love it & use it with my MarkIV.

I love my emgs and they give me the sound and feel i like for metal but sometimes i need a break and half my guitars have medium or lower output pu and they sound great thru my amps, i can play metal or rock and just about anything else with the pearly gates, alnico II pro, burstbucker 2&3 pickups in my les pauls, i just make a few changes in my settings is all and im very happy.
I also use prs hfs and tremonti pu and when i use them i turn my gain down lower than when im using a alnico II because it doesnt sound as good with too much preamp gain and loses clairity.
