I`ve set up my guitars (learning by trying and failing), changed pickups and stuff for a while.

But I never polished the frets. I dunno why.. I guess time have been an issue?

Yesterday I sat down with some steel wool, an old clean sock, a box of metal polish and a plastic bag and some blue masking tape.

I took off the strings, taped down the wood between the frets, and gave them a good run-over with the steel wool. I then put some polish on the sock, and rubbed it real good

HOLY COW!!!!

I did it on a cheapie 7-string that played decent, had a low string height and generally was a nice player. After the treatment, it was BUTTER. I had no idea that a 30 minute job that included no tools could improve the playing so dramatically. This weekend, I`m going to give the others a whirl. I was sitting on the couch the rest of the evening, just noodling unplugged. I was sheer joy! :)

Just thought I`d share, in case there are others like me.

Yep. Fresh and freshened up frets feel fantastic. If you ever want to go another step forward, set up some of your guitars with stainless steel frets. They feel new all the time.

Glad you're enjoying the axe and hopefully the others come out just as well or better. :)

Try this stuff. I'll never use steel wool again unless it's a maple neck because of how black the cloth turns. It would probably clean up on maple though. Mirror finish. I wound up doing my gold rings and stainless watch with it.

I think and hope they will, they are better guitars from the get-go. (Lag the Beast Custom and ESP Eclipse) :)

Yeah! I read up on Gorgomyte the other day, but coulnd`t find any Norwegian distribution on it. I noticed that GHS are pushing it now, but I haven`t seen it on any Norwegian webshops :(

I checked Gorgomyte`s webpage and my Paypal account in that order.
Three packs of Gorgo are (hopefully) on their way to me in a short while :D

Get you one of those stainless fret covers for polishing them off- cuts the time down to a few minuites and no tape mess- you'll never go back ;)

since all of my necks are oiled necks with no sealer - 0000 steel whool is a must! keeps them feeling smoothe and as long as i watch the pressure - no leftover steel shavings in the wood

I stopped using steel wool years ago because I got tired of the shavings getting all over the place, especially stuck to your neck pickup poles. I now use Scotch-Brite..

Just as abrasive, costs less, lasts longer, and leaves zero mess.

There may be substitutions, but nothing is better than 0000...just make sure to tape off your pickups!!!

yup, used that stuff for years

I had to do my 6 year old GMW several weeks ago due to the amount of funk on the back odf the neck...it smelled bad even

I just ordered some gorgomite stuff....I want to work on one of my axes that doesn't feel as smooth as the others....Can't wait to give this stuff a try

Same here. I have a Lag superstrat that has low action and all that stuff.. New strings etc. It still feels I have to put a lot of work into playing it. I hope the Gorgomyte makes the difference. (I got it used, and haven`t done anything to the frets yet.
