Holy Crap... John Norum content.

Killer player...his playing with Europe was tastefully understated..everything he's done ever since, absolutely smoking.

A particular favorite of mine is the Dokken 'Up from the Ashes' disc. \m/

I stand corrected.... but John Norum makes a shitty solid state practice amp sound like an out of this world amp. His vibrato and phrasing are off the charts. I think he used to do the JMP or plexi goosed by DOD or other overdrive when he started though. You can totally hear the Yngwie vibe in the early stuff.

Totally! It was evident to me from the day I first heard "Final Countdown". But the real kicker was when his first solo album came out in the mid-80s. If someone had played "Eternal Flame" for me and said it was a new Yngwie tune, I would have totally believed it. Norum is awesome and I'm glad he's still around. His vocals these days remind me of a John Sykes thing based on what I'm hearing.

In my humble opinion and Ive said this many times, Norum to me is a chameleon on guitar in that he seems to emulate whoever he is listening to at the time. If you listen to his tracks closely you will hear direct lifts from Yngwie, George Lynch,Gary Moore and even EVH.
I like his style moreso these days because it seems as if he has more of his own vibe going on.
He always has been and always will be a great player but in the past he most definitely wore his influences on his sleeve (a bit to much IMHO. (he'd Still kick my ass any day of the week but Im just saying. All IMHO of course!)

Pretty sure he was using his channel switching JCM800's 2205's and 2210's, diode clipping all the way for Norum! I think he upgrades to KT88's in them though. One of my faves. He has the mojo.

On that album I'm pretty sure that he is NOT using the 2205 rig. His is using the 2205's in his current rig but On that Album I'm pretty sure it's a cameron Modded marshall.
It also sounds like that amp is not using el34's but I could be wrong.

You're exactly right Ralphie. I recall there is a tune in Drop D on that album that literally sounds like a lynch mob progression. If Barzini were here, he could tell you a funny sorry about hanging with Norum and Lynch backstage at a Dokken show in Galaxy Theatre. I was in tears when he told it loL! something about John asking random people if they were done eating their dinner and if he could have the leftovers, attempting to roll a doobie with a tea bag and Lynch complaining and pissing about skin not being removed on his chicken breast..The Don can

I'm 100% Positive that Mark cameron knows exactly what was used though.

Jose Arredondo modded Marshalls More than likely cranked to hell and boosted with a TubeScreamer, since as you know already the Jose stuff isn't super gainy on it's own!

Up from the Ashes came out in 1991' i believe, it's one of my all-time favorite albums, wish people wrote songs like that still.

Hard to believe Don Dokken went from that to chicken commercials, they did a gig somewhere up north this year, Wisconsin, Detroit and nobody even showed up, maybe 20 people.
