I'm shitting the bed just talking about an amp of this caliber. I'm sure it is just pure devastation. I hope some here buys it, sends it to MB and posts the results. I mean really, what else is remotely close?

When I had a Strategy 400 and I slaved my old 60w C+ into it, I derailed the train going by 1/4 mile away. I had a 2B Coliseum and I slaved the 60 into it and it was even better, tighter, just mind blowing. But I couldn't justify keeping the Coli as a slave amp...as awesome as that was, I'd imagine a real C+ Coli would be even better....

yeah I've been "making due" with a my quad preamp run into my Mark III coli power section for fun, I guess benefit to that is I get a second 5 band eq in series adding a touch extra scoop it nails Hetfield's early 90's live tone, but you likely can't beat the real thing.

I guess here is my answer to what would be remotely close. I bet it sounded great when that train derailed. I still hear that it was close and when u moved toward the later setup it was better. The circuit in the amp were discussing is the key. Slaving great amps is a method but not the answer. The key is the C++ coliseum itself. Now I have to change my sheets, what a mess lol

Few things I noticed that are kind of weird. maybe not. No voltage selector on back and missing plate for it. No reverb so what is the limit knob?

The limit acts as an attenuator from what I've read, all C+ Colis I've seen have had them. And you'd have to change the voltage to 110, those Coliseums must have been hard wired for the appropriate voltage unlike the rest of the smaller Marks.

My friend had a coliseum 2C++ and it was cool. He sold it for $14,000 to someone in Middle East.

As for sound, it was massive, it honestly I find the coliseum sound to be too much. I must preferred the 2C++ over it. I also owned an incredible Mark III++ coliseum with presence on the front and it too was killer, but again, it was just way too much. You didn’t even need to use the pull deep.

If any of you have a strong need to alleviate your GAS, I've been kicking around the idea of selling my HRG IIC++.
https://youtu.be/H2wKhJeQDYk

You should list it on Reverb, etc. I recently sold my clean 2C++ HRG for $3,200 with new Sylvania 415’s. Killer amps, but I’m more a Marshall player.

I'd be interested, but I don't know the first thing about all these different versions...HRG, DRG, etc.... what does all that mean? What's considered the most desirable & why?

It´s basically the shorthand for the options that were available, I think I got this from the Boogie board many moons ago:

SR – Sixty Watt -Reverb
SRG- Sixty Watt- Reverb- Graphic
HR – 100 Watt-Reverb
HRG- 100 Watt- Reverb-Graphic
HRGX- 100 Watt-Reverb-Graphic-Export
DR – Simul-Class - Reverb
DRG- Simul-EQ-Reverb
DRGX- Simul-EQ-Reverb-Export

Mike B. told me that there are not many HRG C++ out there. The amp is super clean, top condition, and epic! I just have more of them than I need, and I've been gassing for an ESP urban camo Hanneman so I could use the funds. That said I don't *need* to sell it but if the price is right... I think psychodave's $3200 is right on the money.

Oh and.. it has the X101 export transformer, but not the switch. Look at my avatar, it's the one on the bottom.

I think I know what guy in the middle east you're talking about. He bought my old C+ long head for 5500 and he has a room that is literally a Metallica rehersal room time capsule. He has a white Tama Lars kit from 91, he even has an ESP explorer with middle finger inlays from 89 that bought off my friend for big money.

Right price. That's what I paid for mine.

Incredible amp!

Is that the same amp that is in this video as the C+? If so, I guess you have since further modded to the C++. After converting to the C++, does it sound more like the DRG in the video?

Yes, same amp, when it was a C+. It doesn't sound exactly like the DRG as a ++ because it's A/B as opposed to Class A. The gain levels and everything else are the same other than that. Well, actually, the DRG ++ is hard to get a decent clean sound out of. The HRG ++ has more headroom & if I dial the Volume 1 waaay back I can still get a legit clean sound out of it.

People talk about all the differences between C+. In my experience there are two real things.
- Normal amp-to-amp differences that you can't really account for.
- The sound difference between Class A vs. A/B. Guys usually prefer one over the other.
- Ok maybe also what tubes you have in the amp.

I've played the different pre boards, different transformers, different tubes etc. and I feel the above sums it up. They are all epic.

You CAN put a circuit board from a C+ into the IIB KRG and make it a KRG C++, Mike at MESA said so!!! http://forum.grailtone.com/viewtopic.ph ... 90#p506390
In that thread someone asked what board was in the studio preamp, good question. Is it similar or an exact duplicate of the IIC+
Nope.
If they were, people would have bought them up just to use the boards. The similarities are akin to the Black or no stripe III sounding like a C+, or a Quad pre sounding like a C+, or a Mark IV sounding like a C+....
They don't.

I just spent some time with my HRG C++ with the volume on 4 through my 1960B. Such a CRUSHING amp.

I will say that once the volume gets up to metal gig levels the differences between the HRG & the DRG get a lot smaller. If you're at practice volume the DRG's class A will get you into a tonal sweet spot at a lower volume than the HRG. I've played a KRG IIB & a KRG III blue. Ungodly amps, and the loudest thing I've ever played by far, and massive bragging rights (not gonna say I don't want one) but it takes some "what drummer?" volume to get there.

One should never turn down any C+. Even my DG is epic, and if I want to do metal with it I just put an EQ in the loop. That amp with a Strat is amazing. Unless you're the most anal person with both types in the room you'd be hard pressed to tell a difference all else equal. The differences people talk about online are really minor and probably mostly amp-to-amp. They will all get you much epic tone. I'd say your main consideration in buying a C+, other than sheer availability, is how much headroom you want. If you don't gig do a Simul because 15w Class A is the sweetest at those volumes. If you can play loud, game on with any of them.

My Simul-class volume at 1.5 on the Master Volume is gig level! Loud amp for 15 watts.
