How does Mosvalve compare to Tube Power Amps

I'm going to be picking up a power amp in the next few weeks to go with an ADA MP-1 I just bought. I was wondering how the TubeWorks Mosvalve compare to a real tube amp. Am I better of getting something like a Peavey Classic, or Mesa 50/50? I don't want to spend much more than $500 on a power amp.

Hard to really say. With an MP-1 a lot of guys like it with a solid state amp, and a lot of them like a tube amp. It's pretty subjective. I'd probably try out the Mosvalve and if I wasn't liking it, flip it and try tube.

I use an MP-1 a lot, for lower volume home use, and moderate volume rehearsals I use a Carvin power amp, for live I use an ADA tube power amp, just for the extra balls and power. I'll say one thing for solid state power amps, the sound is very consistent.

A peavey classic would shit all over a mosvalve. owned em both.

The Mosvalves are pretty nice. Lightweight and can get pretty loud when needed. They work great with MP-1's imo.

i just got an ada b200s for $80 on craigslist, and it's great... and LOUD.. drives my 2 4x12 half backs great.

If you can get your hands on one of the older Rocktron Velocity poweramps (either 150 or 300) give one a shot. I run a 150 with my MP1 3TM and it sounds great!

back in the day i used that exact setup and loved it,sounded great.

you can still get the 150 and they just reintroduced the 300. how do these sound? Ive been wanting to do a wet dry but the extra cost and wight of another tube amp is discouraging.

Of the Rocktron products that I've tried, owned and loved-- the Velocity power amp is NOT included among the Rocktron products I like. Thin and lame are the 2 words that come to mind.

mosvalve all the way! I just bought another MV-942 and i'm just waiting for it to show up
they sound killer in a W/D/W setup but i actually found it sounds pretty good with some pedals in front acting as preamps.

I have been running the MV962 in my W/D/W rig for years. It sounds unreal. I tried a few different power amps including some of the most expensive and considered "The holy grail" tube amps and the MV962 always won. The only thing I would replace it with is the HH V800.

I own a TubeWorks 100w head. It's a hybrid amp with a tube preamp and a MosValve power section. TBH the amp sounds ok when you turn it up, but the preamp is so lacking that I don't really have much use for it. You can crank the gain and it gets really noisy but sounds only lightly overdriven  If I ever needed to be really loud though, I would probably choose this amp. So I guess that the power section is fairly clean and doesn't color too much.

I find for the classic hard rock crunch, Van Halen Brown Sound, , Led Zep type crunch, the dirty channel on my RT-2100 Tube Works combo, similar to your head on the pre-amp side, give me all I need and more.......

If I want the Joe Satriani, smooth silky sound, then, no, it's wont deliver. When these amps were made, that sound was just beginning to appear on records at the time.....same for today's Heavy Metal sound....these amps were made before that sound became popular, thus, the line won't get you that sound on it's own.

The MV-962's mentioned above are strictly power amps, 100% pure clean......absolutely great for the current, modern processors with Amp Modeling.

They say you can't get the tube sound with solid state... I say B.S. :) With my MV-962, and my Boss GT-6, I've had locally known tube nazi players ask me what I'm using.......it's how you set stuff up.......get it right, it's amazing, if not, it can sound very sterile......

So I have both the Rocktron 150 and the Mosvalve in my rack now and have used the mp1 through marshall and peavey tube power amps as well as the ada b200. IMO the mosvalve is the best non-tube power amp I've tried. The velocity is ok, but really sounds better with the Rocktron stuff (cameleon), the b200 is pretty dismall. When I used the b200 I really needed a graphic eq to "fix" it a little and when I switched to the mosvalve there was a noticable difference. The best two sounds I've used were running through a peavey tube poweramp and my favorite run through the effects returns on two marshall 100 watt heads.

Now you really need to understand that most listener's in a club won't really be able to tell the difference if you're using a SS or a tube poweramp, but you'll be able to feel and hear the difference a little.

I like the Carvin DCM150 and the MosValve 962. I have both and go between them often. The Mosvalve lacks a little bottom end though. With the Mosvalve, you can also change opamps to get a cleaner tone. One of the guys on this forum (forgot the name) gave me a ton of ideas on which opamps to try.

Thats meeeeeeeeeeee

I never liked the honky mid range of the Mosvalve, I find the Mp-1 sounds good with a decent tube Power amp..

Any time man! :cheers2:

I had a SS poweramp for mp-1 when I had it. It sounded great. I never tried a tube poweramp with it, though.
