How heavy can you get with single coils?

just wondering what artist use single coils and rock rhythms. I am kind of converting, but the noise kills me. I really don't want to run a gate, but I might have to. Any examples of heavier rhythms with SCs?

Pretty sweet. Using the Axe? I would never need to be heavier than that. I have been able to coax some great heavier tones with the SLO and the single coil. I have a BK in the bridge, I just don't remember which one? Luxxtone built it and I just don't remember. Love the tones, just a lot of noise in between. (me not your clip :) )

Any of Ty's stuff on the early King's X albums
Heavy with absolute clarity ;)

Kirk Hammet played a Strat with 3 single coils into an ADA MP-1 through a Mesa power amp in the early days. Would Master of Puppets be heavy enough of a sound for what you're looking for?

It's a slippery slope brother. Do you want *TRUE* single coil tone or will you settle for something very close? I've been through a ton of true SC's and Noiseless SC's. My strat has CS 69's in it now and I really like them...but no doubt, they are noisy. The Dimarzio Area's will get you very close to true SC tone and are noiseless. Kinman's are supposed to be great noiseless pups as well.

The Dimarzio Virtual Vintage series of single coils are great for getting an "Area" type of sound (a little beefier) while remaining totally quiet.

I used to play metal with a single-coil Fender. I couldn't get very "heavy" and punchy tones out of it (as in hammer on anvil), but there was a sort of biting clarity that was heavy in and of itself.

In my opinion it often sounds better when you have one guitarist playing low-end chords with amps like a rectifier, uberschall or Herbert, and another one doing higher notes with a more cutting hot-rodded Marshall sort of sound. It fills out the spectrum better and crowds the low-end less. In this kind of setup it could be well possible for the latter to use single-coils to cut through the mix and get an overall very heavy and full sound even in more extreme metal styles. Of course that's mix vs single player, and might not be what you're after.

I was just going to say that! Doug Aldrich used Strats for loads of stuff on Bad Moon Rising, and Burning Rain. Check out the Burning Rain stuff for some of the sickest strat tones.

Yeah, the noise can be annoying. For Strats, I swear by the Suhr Silent Backplate....I use it on my Strat and love it. Quiets the noise down about 95%, it's awesome. But that you can only use on something that uses a strat style backplate.

For P90's, the new Lindy Fralin hum-cancelling P90's are amazing. Probably one of the best P90's tones period, and they're hum-cancelling.

For Tele's the DiMarzio stuff is good, not as great as a regular nice tele pickup, but good. The Kinman stuff is great IMO, I really like it, but they don't have many models to choose from. Basically just a stock 60's style and a Broadcaster type. So if you want something hotter and overwound, you're outta luck.

That's friggin' ridiculous

Thanks guys. listening now to some clips. I may just run a gate. I love the pups which Jerry (Luxxtone) reminded me they are Piledrivers. Great sounding pups for me, just noisy on higher gain stuff. And I don't get too heavy - Queensryche/Tesla type stuff.

I had been moving to lower output humbuckers and finally fell off the ledge. If I go the gate route my next Luxxtone might be a Charvel style P90 guitar - with Floyd. :D

FWIW--it doesn't count if you put a single-coil-sized humbucker in a strat. That's not a "single-coil."

Piledrivers are mean single coils! running at 13.k there some of the hottest tele pickups money can buy, i thought about buying them for awhile but i feel they take away from that tele twang and vibe a bit (just going off of what i've heard in clips.)
why not try the suhr silent system? i hear that gets rid of 90% of noise without reducing any high end or tone.
I might give jerry a call and see what he recommends me as im still looking to upgrade the tele set in my road worn.

Yeah, I think Jerry was trying to keep me from going into shock.    But the rating isn't always indicative of real output - at least that is my experience with BKs. They rate hotter then they sound/feel to me. The guitar below has no back plate.

I've always been told p90s were true single coils. but I'm referring to this guitar anyway:

Hmm maybe see if jerry can retrofit one on just screw the backplate in and i dunno fit the rest in the back cavity lol.
BTW i dunno if your heard of the Bareknuckle Sinner but its an overwound piledriver so you might look into that if you want something even hotter which i couldn't imagine lol.
Gorgoues guitar though! may i ask how much it ran you that looks like my kind of fiddle

EDIT: Doesnt suhr sell the silent system in there teles?
Which don't come with backplates i know scott henderson has a SSC in one of his guitars that internal as it was put it after he got the guitar...

I've found that the new Seymour Duncan YJM Fury SC ( bridge ) is pretty thick and tight sounding for heavy rhythm's. Also, if you can find them, Duncan made a SC noiseless called the Classic Stack. I think Doug Aldrich used them years ago,and he's a bridge humbucker guy.
